Hi all,

Happy to have found this forum, I hope to learn lots and get to understand what detectors are the good ones for my area.

I've been thinking of starting prospecting and detecting but as I dont know anyone to ask in person I haven't taken that first step.

I hope people can answer some questions as I take the first steps in this area.

A couple of questions:

What detector would people recommend for the Wimmera and Grampians area?
I would like to use it for gold and perhaps things like coins?

Thanks for any help
 Kat

Hey and welcome Kat :) its hard to say which detector is good for certain areas it also depends on other factors to like how deep you plan on digging and what kind of budget your looking at lol Im kind of new to detecting but ive got myself an SDC2300 and it can pick up stuff so small its like a vaccum cleaner. I know someone who has a Eureka gold and seems to do ok with that.
But welcome to the forums lots of great people here :)
Justin

Thanks Justin,

I have been thinking budget I have seen some around the $2000. I had heard the Minelab's were good though and was thinking of about $500 for the first one, I hadnt thought about how deep on digging. Wimmera soil has been rather dry some areas are sandy though.

Thanks for the reply, happy digging. .

Hi Kat
Nice to so see someone also new here.
I hope you have lots of fun out there and find the detector you need.
I have 2 personally (gpx 5000 and the sdc 2300) but have limited experience with all the detector out there.
I have just recently stated prospecting for gold myself and find the 5000 suites me the best.
But there is people here that would know much more then me.
Good lock
:)

Gday kitkat! A member recently joined a few weeks back from the Wimeera as well so there are some people about tgat way having a go :)
Fron what I know, you would certainly need to check and make syre you can prospect in the wimmera and not break any laws or upset local tribes as I know some things are a bit touchy out there, ie; little desert

Thanks everyone,

I was only going to go on some friends property, we do have a lot of indigenous land so understand that I would never go there.
Must admit Im getting a bit excited by the thought of getting out there and having a go.

Hi Kat

You probably are better off to ask that question in another thread. There would be many forum members with that machine who may offer assistance. Spend some time getting used to how the various sections of the forum works etc. Try doing a search using the x terra 505 as key words etc.

Good luck

Bob

Xterra 505 or 705 are a ok machine. I personally don't like the 'number display' system, but they do work great after little practise. Theres a list on the forum which shows number ids and what the likely targets are for 505 and 705 numbers on the lcd.

Garrett ace 250 is very nice too

Gidday kitkat and welcome to PA.
I agree with Maxwell regards posting your question in one of the detecting threads.
The only advise i would give is to do a bit of research as to where you'll be detecting. If you're detecting in your immediate area there may not? be detectable (surface/shallow) gold bearing areas to work. Same might also apply for the Grampians area?
If you're planning to travel down to the Golden Triangle area then that changes things. You may decide to treasure hunt around your immediate area which might also influence your choice also.
Sorry to probably confuse you more mate, have a think about what you'll most likely be able to do regards travelling/time/gold or treasures etc and then throw up a question in one of the other threads where the specialist detectorists can probably help give you a clearer choice. good luck.

Oh yeah good point. My last comment was only for detecting coins and relics.

If its gold your after, you will need to pay minimum $2000 basically if you want to detect gold

There are some areas close by, some a short travel for gold from wimmera region

Cheers scroungey
