My name is Martyn and I am 68 years old.

My wife and I are retired and like to off-road caravan a lot.

Our caravanning experiences have taken us the length and breadth of Australia, usually to remote fishing spots, from inland locations to open ocean pursuits.

On many of our trips I've thought about 'prospecting', having been first introduced to it when I was a wild rivers canoeing teenager and having had a go 'on-and-off' over the years.

Lately during our travels we have met many other retirees who have taken up the hobby, talking lots about the technological advances of metal detectors, clubs, on-line forums, the availability of Youtube channels and the availability of on-line mapping resources all to aid the research necessary before heading of to any region in the hope of making a find, albeit probably a small one.

So it's with bated breath and anticipation that I approach this new interest. I must admit that it is because of the time I've invested over the last few months that I feel ready to take my initial steps.

I have today got my Fossicking Permit from Forestry NSW, bought a Pro-Gold panning kit the other day as well as sorting my range of 'digging tools' and protective clothing etc in readiness, and booked to attend the Prospectors Home Club Fossicking Frenzy at Oberon (18th Jan 2025) as well as joining Prospecting Australia on-line forum, all in order to prepare properly.

One enthusiast I met a few months ago whilst camping in the Warrumbungle's, advised us about the 'potential now being realised' on the South Coast and considering this region is my 'backyard' I imagine it's there that I may make my first initial steps.

I am in the market for either a Equinox 900 or a Gold Monster 1000 v2. The Black Friday sales are about to end but I am a little reluctant to just go and buy one when I have not used either let alone a metal detector of any sort. That's why the plan is to attend the Fossicking Frenzy.

In the meantime I hope it's OK to continue my 'detectorist' work so that when I do make my first post on PA it will be of value to other like-minded enthusiasts.

Safe prospecting to all,

Martyn aka
FindaKeepa ; ))

I should have said "I am in the market maybe for either ..."

What I do know now from further 'detectorist' work that I am looking forward to meeting club members at the Oberon Fossicking Frenzy on the 18th January 2025 because I will definitely get the 'good-oil' on PI detectors that discriminate.

Until then I will hasten-slowly : ))
