Welcome simmo. You are in a great area for gold. The area is one of the most extensively mapped (old and modern) areas of the state with large tracts of crown land still open for prospecting. The added bonus is that you also have access to the Goldfields Research Centre at the Bendigo library (upstairs from the coffee shop). It has a wealth of information that is not available on the 'net -old books, reports, archives, maps etc etc. It has proven most productive for me and covers a wider region than just Bendigo. There are also some fantastic books about - I highly recommend anything written by Frank Cusack. G Mackay's 'History of Bendigo' is also available in a reprint and don't ignore the books for sale at Bendigo Tourism and the Central Deborah Mine shop.

This is from a 1923 map where they did an overlay of 'modern' Bendigo over the goldfields - I am sure you will recognise some of the locations plotted onto the modern streets and locations. The yellow is the spread of plotted gold along the Bendigo Creek line. Also, with the number of shafts throughout the city -you will understand why people's backyards still disappear!!

There are several clubs and groups operating out of Bendigo - PMAV etc. These may be worth a chase up.

Good luck.
