Hi people,
New to the forum, recently moved to Christmas Island (in Perth for the next month or so). In studying the history of the island, and exploring on trailbike, I have decided to take a detector back over to play around some of the ruins from 100 or so years ago that the jungle has reclaimed.

I came across the forum when I started looking up specs and reviews of detectors.

My only experience with detectors was about 20 years ago in Dunnoly with an old Garrett Deepseeker. (did meet a few people in that area and I think it was Clive Boyd? a local there that modified my deepseeker and gave me some tips.

Roll forward to now.
Budget is in the play but not too serious level.
Can get hold of an old Garrett groundhog, or buy a cheapy on eBay.
Something like the GC3080 (says waterproof) or a MD-3010II

Cheers

Cliff

Welcome to PA Cliff. I presume you mean 'our' Christmas Island and not the one out in the Pacific?

Its funny how education can change your decisions. (which is why I joined)

I have decided to put off buying something old or something cheap from ebay, and will put aside some $$ and get a something like a ACE 250 or Fisher F2 and a pinpointer.

Decisions subject to review :p

A wise decision DF. :D

The Ace250 is a good little machine for a bit of fun. A few people on here still use them. :D
Welcome. :D

I decided to wait for the new Garrett Ace machines to come out, but in the meantime:

I love gumtree.

Picked up a Coinmaster 6000Di series 2 for $70
Original Box manual etc and a huge array of old goldfield maps.

Welcome to PA Fibre. Sounds like a score you got there. It sure will be interesting what you find among the ruins! Keep us posted when you go back!

Good call - they're solid old 1980s machines and will probably outlast many of us. :D I'd guess it will stand up better than the modern plastic, digital machines to the rugged environment you got it for.

In case you didn't get a copy with it, the manual is downloadable here:

Must be beginners luck.
Get home from work and check out Gumtree.

What a great introduction to the forum and way to start it off scoring an awesome wand :D the coinmasters are great to swing as well bringing many finds

Hope he is finding all sorts of treasure

Last weekend was wet in perth so I decided to make it an education day.

Learned about wet grass and the different sounds and settings.

Found quite a few pull tabs and junk with the ACE250, but nothing to keep yet.

I have pulled apart the Coinmaster and need to free up 2 of the potentiometers which are very . I decided to replace all of the electrolytic capacitors and then test the potentiometers on the scope after freeing them up. The internals on the old Coinmaster are in great condition.

If you search on Gumtree for 'ace250' in western australia, the ad is still up.....
