New to prospecting

Hi guys and gals
Im new to the Gold prospecting caper. Looking to start with panning close to Geelong with the view to learn detecting and do a gold prospecting guided tour later in the year. Just wondering when would be my best place to start. Any input would be greatly appreciated

EDIT : Just noticed your question was actually "when" to start.
I guess now is as good a time as any and probably the best.
