Hi all, Nathan from Bendigo here.
Just after some advice if possible. I'm very keen to get out there and find some gold (coins/buttons etc), but don't really know what detector i should buy for a first timer. I don't want to spend major dollars but I'm still after a fairly reliable and easy to use detector. I assume its like everything else and you get what you pay for.
Look forward to hearing what people recommend, any hints and tips would be amazing.
Thanks.

Hi Nathan - this question comes up often. Your probably best off giving people a budget range i.e $500 to $1000 as there are many options to suit a variety of budgets. There's also a lot of info on the forum already so in the meantime do a bit of reading. :)

Hi mbasko , thanks for the quick reply.
Well with the bit of reading i have been doing I've come across the 'Minelab xterra 705' . It seams like a fairly well rounded entry level detector.
Until i get my bearings with everything that comes with prospecting I'm probably happy to spend up to $1000 and the upgrade if and when required.
Is there anything different you would suggest? also I'm thinking would it be worth having a look at a second hand detector for my first? My only worry is that i don't know enough about what each detector is capable of and if a certain detector is in good condition compared to another. Don't want to do my cash in by not buying a well looked after machine.
Just trying to get my head around it al still. ha.
thanks again.

Hi Nathan not saying the xterra 705 will not find gold but if you look at what detectors are finding gold regular the xterra would be a long way down the list .Look at the other minelab detectors 2200d and up price range from $1000 and up regards john :)

Hi john,
I understand what you saying mate. I'm a little torn as to what i should do.
I don't want to get a model of detector that isn't REALLY going to help me find what I'm after and end up turning me away from continuing with the hobby. I understand having a detector certainly doesn't guarantee that you will find gold either. ..but would like to feel like I'm at least in the hunt with the detector i get. haha.
Do you know of anywhere near Bendigo that i could rent a detector for a trial run before i purchase.
thanks mate.
