Watched a doco recently, i think they call the people looking for Lasseters reef the Lasseter Loonies :p :D

Thanks Scrounger, today. Yep I posted a Bush tucker man doco a few weeks ago. It sparked my interest again when I came across it. Interesting story thats for sure, even if it's nothing more. You'd think it would have been rediscovered by now.

Was that the doco where the local fellow theorized it being to the east in the opposite direction from where lasseter went because his partner (i think the partner was a geologist) died and took the secret with him. It was a good watch :)

yeah I was the Meta. Watch one and it sucks ya right into watching more. :)

The thought crossed my mind but......One of them continued on with Lasseter and stayed almost until he died making the assumption late in the journey when it was too late!

I wont spoil it for those who have not read it as yet but, Lasseter's Gold was a great read on a recent holiday somewhere warm. Warren Brown does a creditable job in his research and objective commentary and captures the essence of what transpired whilst leaving room for conjecture within the readers own thoughts. Like most of us, I learned of Harold Bell Lasseter's tale in primary school but knew very little of the whole story of Lasseter and the expedition that ended in tragedy.

As Brown observes, Lasseter was once a name that could instantly spark fierce arguments, engendered strong opinions and robust convictions that rallied countless gold-hungry expeditions into the dead-heart of our country. But for all of it and the modern searches undertaken using today's technology, I'm of the view that Lasseter was indeed a man of eccentric, if not deluded and questionable character who tried all sort of scams and schemes on all sort of people during the desperate times of The Great Depression. Less of a moral judgement and more of an observation of a resourceful and inventive character during tough times.

Very entertaining and as a few have already commented here and as Brown observed, there is a modern and timeless relevance to Lasseter's story and the pursuit of his lost reef - the indescribably priceless treasure that exists within the thoughts and hopes of all prospectors that if they just keep looking, dig one more hole, try one more lead or likely looking bit of country, we just may find our own El Dorado yet, the treasure is always elusive and just beyond our outstretched tired and aching arm's reach.

Go beg, buy or borrow it; I'm pretty sure you will love if not live the adventure.

Regards,

The Peacekeeper.
