SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The Office of Mineral & Energy Resources no longer provides specific information on their web site relating to Fossicking.

Fossicking under the South Australian Mining Act is defined as follows.

: the gathering of minerals,
(a) as a recreation, and
(b) without any intention to sell the mineral or to utilise them for a commercial or industrial purpose.

Fossicker's do NOT need a Miners Right to Fossick within South Australia.

There are several auriferous areas throughout South Australia.
Listed below are some of the more popular locations.

Do I need a Miner's Right to go fossicking?
Before fossicking within designated fossicking areas within Forest Reserves you must purchase an annual or daily permit online from the ForestrySA website

In other areas of South Australia no permit is required to fossick, however you must obtain prior permission from landowners before entering their property.

NSW I think it was around $27 a year

But then house rates are cheaper in NSW. So it's all swings & roundabouts.
