So I took out my recently purchased EZ Sluice on its first expedition yesterday.

With no real idea what I was doing, I checked out some of the gold maps on here and decided Sofala was going to be my location.

Upon arriving the river wasn't flowing liked I imagined it would be and I already realized the limitations of my equipment.

Any who I tossed in the EZ Sluice and dug up some material from a pre-existing hole which I found.

Even though I now realize that I had horribly set up the sluice and my panning technique was was wrong, I still managed to find quite a few specks of gold.

I had to throw most of it back because I couldn't for the life of me get the gold into the snuffer bottle. Seemed to suck up everything but the gold alright

Anywho, thats my story and I think I'm hooked now!

Welcome to Prospecting Australia Gavin.

The EZ Sluice is a great little sluice providing there's enough water flow. I find it works best when you classify down to around 1/4", much bigger and it'll clog up.

The best advice I can give you is to keep practicing mate, gold prospecting is one of those things that requires a lot of patience and as long as you keep your expectations in check and are enjoying yourself out there, it's all that really matters.

I'm sure you'll pick up a few pointers around the forum and master sluicing and panning in no time, and If you have any questions please be sure to ask.

Hey Gav, I started out with the ez-sluice it goes alright for small amounts wont be long till you upgrade mate, Angus Mckirk sluice seem to be the next step, and most blokes on here love them. Get that snuffer situation sorted mate or put your cons in an envelope and send them my way I will care for them much better than the river will. hahaha Cheers Balx

Hi Gav , what type of snuffer bottle you using ? The only bits it wont pickup either dont fit into the nozzle or are too heavy. If small enough, you must take up with water

Cheers Paul

did you have plenty of water around the gold specs when you were sucking them up ?

those little bottles dont work with just air , gotta be wet wet wet

Welcome to the forum Gavin. Every trip is usually better than the last, and if you're in the Turon region your gold collection won't take very long to start looking impressive. Look forward to sharing the adventure and chating on the threads. Best of luck out there mate.

Cheers Wal.

Won't take long to learn to pan OK, great result to see colour first up. If you think of something bigger have a look at Wal's highbanker, haven't seen one but it ticks all the right boxes and people here like them. Meantime lots of people put a flare to collect more water for low flow situations. Have a look through the forum & youtube has some good stuff and some crap but you will sort that quickly with reference here.
Most importantly ASK, it will save the stuffups i've made.

Snuffler bottle is tricky at first because you blow water at the wrong time.

Make sure you hold it firm then after sucking it put it in the upright position so any gold clears inside into the bottle itself.

G'day all, just joined and looking around for some prospecting buddies in the Bacchus Marsh area... I've been out to Beechworth and done some sluicing before, checked out a few areas closer to home (Creswick, Daylesford).

I'd like to try out Gem Fossicking and keen to find a group of like minded people.

Been looking at various Volcanic regions in Vic as they are supposed to hold good pockets of gems.

Cheers.
