I have some neighbours who get very upset if I wake up in the morning to feed the cattle while they are trying to sleep in. There house is about 200 meters away from mine. I work full time so have to do jobs on the property during my days off. Today they were filming me while I am trying to work and do some odd jobs on the tractor. If I use a rifle anywhere on my property they call the police who dont appreciate theyre time being wasted but have to come and see me each time anyway. They have even called the rspca telling them my cattle are starving when they are rolling fat. Guess I have to get used to being watched and filmed but I dont like it much. Are people allowed to film you like that ?

Good advice 7.62 marksman. Before I moved here from Queensland I had drug addicts and dealers for neighbours so I know it could be worse.

yes i have had three lots of neighbors like that so far
the house just had to be hazard cleaned because of then cooking
no bad for 2 kids under 12 in the house with behavioral problems mmmm i wonder why that was

I've got a neighbour who sounds like he's related to yours  seriously this bloke is out there. He's given us nothing more than grief for the last 17 years if we do anything he doesn't like, I won't bore you with the details. Apart from the last episode 2 months ago on a Sunday night my boy's were spotlighting for a pesty fox that was taking chooks. They nailed it about 8.30 :) and had been told to be packed up by 9pm, they were on their way to the front fence to hang their prize when this unit showed up and went berserk carrying on. The boys politely told him that they were done and had just nailed the fox that was taking chooks. I don't think I'll be hearing from him again after I fronted him at his place and put him in his place.

Goldfreak if you're legal and within council by-laws there's nothing they can do. I doubt the filming is legal so I'd get it witnessed and take it to the cops and have an order placed on them, hopefully they will learn to be tolerant and change their ways. It's a pain we have to go to these lengths at times but if it sorts it out it's worth the effort.

Is it the EPA who set noise limits for councils to follow?

Pretty sure it is MH however in Victoria allowable noise levels and times of noise can vary depending on the zoning of each area.

I will add from the other side of the fence, no one on here I hope. Probably get shot down, but there are two sides to every story. We have lived on our 5 acres for 26 years, rural urban, very quiet area, about 12 years ago next door was sold and was purchased by young couple from Sydney with 4 goats. The goats immediately set about trying to push the fence down even though there was the same food on both sides, we ended up clearing all that was in reach on our side. Then we were subject to a car racing through the bush on their block up until 11pm at night, horns blowing and people yelling, light flashing all over the place, then there was electric guitars and drums that they proceeded to pound on when ever they felt the mood. Shortly after 2 golden retrievers arrived, male and female, male was good, female would sit on their back verandah and bark constantly when they were not home. Then the loud music started, it was sufficiently loud that an old lady about 1 km away could hear it. We put up with this for 6 years until new neighbour across road came and had a go at me for loud parties, when I explained it was not me, he asked why do I put up with it. My reason was I did not want to cause problems, I had asked the noisy one politely on a few occasions to turn it down and if it was turned down it was only until the next day. I decided to do something and the dog barking for 5 hours straight, 4 barks, take a breath and go again was sufficient for me. I again tried to reason with him and he stormed off.

We then got extra loud music most nights and a lot of times up until 1.45am, there was machinery being used, nail gun, router, electric saws, he even mowed the lawn at 10.45pm one night and after that decided to knock some structure apart. Police were called numerous times over the music and they stated that it was too loud, but only told him to turn it down, this has continued now for 4 years, at present he has an order on him which has toned the music and tools being used down and it stops now at 8pm. I never wanted to stop the music, I just felt that I should not have to listen to it, on occasions we have had to wear headphones to hear our TV.

So we thought it was over, but the female dog died and they now have a 12 months old kelpie who does the same thing when they are not home, when they or we start a motor the dog barks frantically the whole time the motor is going, wife spoke to the woman next door and was told that we have to wait for it to get used to us, so we have put in a complaint about the dog, they were not home for 24 hours last week and we heard it barking up until we closed our house up at 10pm on a warm night to try and get some sleep, I awoke a couple of times during the night and it was still barking, by morning I think it had laryngitis and could only manage a few barks.

Today my wife did some washing and hung it on the line and he decided to mow an area which is bare of grass and a cloud of dust started to come across our yard, wife ran out and removed the washing and he put the mower away.

I have not done anything to cause the problems other than to try and get things back to an acceptable level, we tried to get them to go to mediation to sort out the problem, but they refused. One one occasion the Police suggested it might be easier if we moved, then the problem would be gone, so it now seems like we are the cause of the problem, not the noise. We seem to be the only ones affected, all other houses are far enough away to be able to close it out or vacant blocks. We were told by the Police that if we did a video with the noise and him working late at night they might be able to do something, but I chose not to do that as it would only make matters worse as some have suggested retaliation.

If on a block with some distance between you'se all choose your hedgerow plants wisely for your area and plant it deep enough that your hedgerow/forest affords both visual and noise abatement as it grows.... live with cheer and mirth as your problems subside beneath a living screen of happiness.
Just a gardening job well worth its while.... some screen trees grow thick n tall... throw in a few food trees here n there too... but not where you need the thick screen of green the most.
O:)

thats not me too late. I dont have a dog. Its was 0730 am this morning when I got on the tractor which is too early for them. I do shoot the ocassional fox expecially during lambing season. I have a young family and work all the time so no late night parties for me. I think they are animal lovers who resent me shooting the foxes.

No goldfreak I know it was not you, I have no problems with the normal country sounds, chainsaws, tractors mostly whatever, just loud music and barking dogs that bark because they are bored, all my forefathers were on the land, but this was the best I could afford and now it is gradually getting a bit harder to look after with our age, but we have no plans of moving.

Silver, the soil here is pathetic, just a sandy clay, native trees and tea tree love it, we did try to get a hedge going many years ago for the privacy, but some that we planted are still alive, but have not grown. We had to put about 10 tons of sheep manure to establish a vegie garden, now all the trees have tapped into it and we have lost the battle.

You read my mind silver. Our boundry is about 150meters long and I am on their northern side. I was thinking about planting some giant bamboo but that would send runners into theyre garden so thought maybe a plant like Laylandia which is a super fast and thick growing conifer.

If you have light and water there is still hope for your garden. Some parts of my property has good soil and other parts are rubbish. Only way to grow things in the bad parts is to go up instead of in by planting on mounds of soil from the good parts. Mounds seem to do much better job keeping the plants happy than holes for this. Not sure how much it would cost to truck soil in though.

No when we brought the sheep manure in we also brought in the weeds that were not native to the area, I made the vegie and a seperate flower garden too big, I am not a gardener, we rely on rain water, my wife decided to let the vegie garden go as it was like painting Harbour Bridge, clear one side just in time to start again on the other side, weeds grew well with no water, but vegies needed the water which made the weeds more happy and we want to have some time to do a bit more detecting, beach or gold, does not matter, she enjoys that more than pulling weeds.

I decided not to retaliate on the grounds that it may affect other persons in the area as it is eventually going to get out of control as can be seen on the news occasionally, but I was offered about 10 roosters by my daughter in law, my chook run is about 50 meters away from their bedroom I think. A special roost with a vibrating motor set to shake the roost every hour during the night sounded good, but the better one was a microphone on the fence to pick up his noises, through an amplifier with about 2 second delay or echo into the old directional megaphone style speakers that used to be all around old show grounds, all aimed at his house, the volume would be set, but if he increased his volume then mine would do it automatically, if he stopped mine would not make a noise, did speak to a legal eagle about it one day, he was not real sure how I would go if Police were called as I was not playing any music, but it had a lot of appeal. Opted to leave it all alone and hope that it all settles down one day.
