Yeah it was a great buy when it was around the $600 mark. I think that I will take the advice given and move onto the SPP which is now definitely the much better option.

In saying that, I will still keep on the lookout just in case one pops up at a good price, for some reason I just want one? :)

If you can get one for between $500-700 go for it... if not, SPP.

I'd sell you mine but its heavily modified, and i like it :p

Thanks for the thought anyway...

Looking at the workbench photo, I assume that you are a technician, my brother is a TV tech and his workshop looks the same, he has lots of equipment, and as he calls them "crows" and heaps of part etc.

Do you repair and modify detectors, If so, would I be rude in picking for brain if required?

I noticed on a few pictures on the net that Minelab appear to paint their internal board components white. I assume this is to stop DIY
repairs and mods..

Not a qualified technician, Just Tag Tester.. Just started working towards getting my electrical engineering certs..
I don't do modifications, unless they are to my own hardware..

I do some repairs as mentioned in a couple other threads, friends/family kinda deal..
I'm happy to share what info i have, but nothing that could cause damage..

Yeah Minelab pain the boards white, they also file off the component ID's in some cases.. makes things harder.. but i suppose it reduces the risk of DIY explosions lol.

I guess that you would have quite a number of exact copies from China should the components be identified. I had a look on the net and there a quite a number of the Minelab copies which look identical externally, however I believe are carp internally!

A lot of people have taken the chance and have been burnt, surely one would realise that a GPX5000 for $500 would be fake? Oh well I guess that's how the survive... :)

The fakes are pretty good 'Looking' fakes, but complete trash the people who import and resell should be kicked repeatedly in the crotch..

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and prospecting.only got into it 12 months ago when I hired a gpx 5000 from guys at coiltek.got hooked straight away even though didn't get any gold.any way spent a couple months researching and purchased a f1A4 level 2 from jack lange.even though some say a bit pricey for a beginer I have found it super easy and super sensitive to use and all over a gr8 product have added a 14 nugget finder mono coil and am getting gr8 response from it.Havant found any gold yet but that is not the detectors fault pleanty of bullets and ring pulls down deep and my test pieces when buryed sing a lovely song .22 gm and 4 gramer.all in all very happy and looking forward to the first nugget :)

Congrats on the L2 k Man..

You'll be over the moon when you hit that first nugget with a 'mine detector' ... hell when i bought mine 7 months ago, i was told (you'll never find gold with that thing)
'its a land mine detector' as if that's all it could possibly do???..

Now its getting very hard to get hold of one since the word is out that they actually find more than land mines ;)

Thanks lazy trommel hopefully sooner rather than later.yeah I have read a lot of negative comments from people that Havant tryed them but all those that have swear buy them.I'm a believer and a user and if I lived a little closer to the gold fields I would definatly have gold to show as I'm stuck down the bottom of the SA/Vic border but distance isn't going to deter me now I'm swinging my trusty f1A4 mod2.soon there will be more believers and I believe the prices they are going for noe for a stock standard is living proof

That's the way Kman...keep the positive attitude and you will be rewarded with nuggets. Can't wait to see your first find

Cheers

I'm a proud member of the F1A4 club, purchased just under $600 and modded for $600 to Level 2. She should be back soon for a field trip test. Was an easier purchase decision given that I don't get out enough and being able to pay in installments so to speak made it bearable for the wife not to criticise the purchase. Too many positive reports on the machine to ignore for not too much spend!

Gr8 to here twapster who did your mods? Be interesting to compare against the jack Lange mods I'm still not 100% sure who dose his for him.there were no cheap ones left when I bought mine so I quickly bit the bullet before these ones ran out to.I think I sat back and watched them for too long before jumping.I've seen the mod 3 for sale now on eBay but out of my price range
