Had a bit of a play with the SDC and a bit of fun this afternoon. Very windy out here today, but that was not really a problem with the LED visual display to go along with the audio signal. If I were on a goldfield on a gusty day like today then I would definitely have the headphones on!
Did four
very basic tests (very similar to those I did back in the day with the 5000). As mentioned in those previous tests, a target in the field offers a much better response than I get out here. Our ground is full of ironstone and salt-laden silicate/quartz conglomerate. Pretty nasty stuff in general. It doesn't vary much like the goldfields do either. The 5000 won't even pick up the 0.14gm piece I found at Stuart Town while testing out here, but I had found it easily at 11cm (4 inches) depth originally. So that's an indication of the rough old ground I'm testing in.
1st test was a 3.43gm nugget at 10 inches depth and it had no trouble hearing it. Quite a nice surprise really! It was an easily audible, sweet "dig me" signal -even in very gusty winds. Got a better signal as I moved the setting from 2 back each notch towards the Normal settings of 3, 4 and 5. Quite clear on the higher settings. I even tried it set way back at the Salt settings and it was still quite audible.
Steveo threw a small piece of jewelry in the form of a plated ring into a hole for the 2nd test. He buried it at around 7-8 inches depth and the machine overloaded on it while on setting 2. Still had a strong response holding the coil about a foot above the ground.
3rd test we tried a 0.2gm (3mm round) lead shot sunk in around the 4 inch mark and it was an easily audible response using setting 2 which improved slightly when moved towards the Normal settings of 3 and 4.
4th test was the 3.43gm nugget on it's side offering a much smaller response as it's flattish in shape and set to 6 inches depth. Easily heard using the setting 2. Overloaded as I moved the settings back towards Normal, ie; 3, 4, and 5.
Ground balance was beautifully smooth. Pretty much identical to the GPX5000 from the initial impressions we had. The weight didn't seem too much of an issue for the time we ran it. A harness would make life a little easier though, particularly if you're prone to the odd ache and pain in the shoulders or back region.
All in all I'm really looking forward to getting out into the goldfields with it for a real run against the 5000.
I may try a few larger targets a bit deeper (if I can get the holes down! lol) in the coming days.
Kindest regards,
Shauno.
