Last time I took my double D off, to clean the shafts, on replacement the coil went crazy, false signals, (even when held in the air steady) when I put it back on. I took the connector to headunit, on and off a few times, and fixed it. Today I swapped out the new sniper coil, and put the double D back on....problem returned. Put the new coil on, no weird constant signals.....issue with D, wonder what?

Think I will try and buy/solder-on a new connector, before assuming its a cracked coil. Its not falsing on 6 bars now, which is ok, I reflowed the solder inside the connector. Add another bar of sensitivity, and it starts falsing again.

Hi Rocket,

I have had this before with my coils. An experienced prospector friend of mine told me the following:

One thing to watch for when you put coil connectors on is to push it in and start winding the screw top.

Then push the connector in again. You will often find it will go in further. Then finish doing up the screw top.

If you don't do this then you will sometimes get falseing like that.

Havent had a problem with this since.

Hope it helps. :D

Cheers,

Grant

Thanks mate, I will give it go!

Never seen a cracked coil yet... But seen plenty where the cable has failed at the strain relief...

Oppps, saw a cracked coil the other day, but some one had reversed over it...

Testing outside, I know they go a bit batty inside. I think its the connector, so tempted the swap it, with the one on the new coil....think I will.

Put the new connector on, cut back some cable, that I suspected wrongly to ge strained....upshot is I now one usable coil, the double D, which is only stable when I notch the sensitivity down 2 bars, which is still perfect park, or beach mode. Maybe santa will leave me an e-trac!

Rocketaroo, if you need a coil to get by with, I have a stock Ace 250 concentric, and the large Ace 250 concentric coil sitting around if you want to borrow one. Also give Phil at GMC a call, he should nut out the issue pretty quick, having so much experience with these detectors. As AM mentioned, probably strain relief issue at the coil end of things. :)

Thanks Goldpick, I might take you up on that generous offer. I will have a fiddle with it on the weekend, and let you know. I cant spend any money on gear right now, in a few months I will have completed tafe, and should have a job....a new/better detector will be my reward :)

Very impressed.

Great stuff.

Well done.

Good one Sandta
No hesitation in helping

Had a similar problem with my ace
But it seems to have sorted its self out
Just think it got to hot the other day on the beach / didn't like the humidity
Erratic sounds and cursor pinging out all over the place thought it was going to self destruct ,took the plug out and
Cooled the machine in the car for ten minutes with ac running cable back in still the same
But pushed the connecter a little bit further back in then tighten the nut all good from there
