Good to see you are both back on the job again, cleaning up as always. ;) What are the chances of finding that other half of the bangle, that would be pretty damned slim at the beach, amazing. :)

Yes GP I was equally amazed ... Reckon the chances of finding it were similar to lotto so I'll need to buy a ticket soon!

Thanks guys ... Always some crusty pennies and tonight was no different - Team bogan minus one tonight so out I went and here are the finds ....

Certainly a non eventful evening with 7 coins - 2 predecimals with one being a silver shilling (#98) and some brown buggers with a couple of moderns - a conglomerate with at least one coins in it - a brass 1/2 Oz weight from a scale set - sinkers and crappola ...

A beautiful night and worked up a sweat being over dressed for the weather ... And losing some weight for a change!

Today I had what I call a "red letter" day ... They only come up once in a great while so I really enjoy it when they do...

It was International Moke Day - a day when Moke enthusiasts get together once a year for a day of Moking around your local area. Beside the cities of Australia, Paris, Sri Lanka, and other foreign countries have Moke owners getting together for a drive today. I was with the Adelaide crew - and we battled 100km winds in the drive out to the Barossa for a bit of wine tasting

We had a great time and drove about 250k in 28 degree weather - the winds were the only distraction - here is one of my jalopys - the silver one that went topless today

Home for tea and a bit of television - then Team Bogan went out on the beach after the big blow to see what we could find ...

Crusty pennies galore ... The beach is even more sanded in than before but we managed to find where they were hiding...

I also reached one of my detecting goal I set for myself this year - 100 silver coins.

We bagged 37 coins - 11 predecimals including two three pence (#99 & #100) as well as a heap of brown buggers, 1 x .50, 7 x .20, an old brass belt buckle, a medal or tag of some sort and a huge sinker..

And we found a little junk - the coins were more plentiful than the junk for a change ...

But I will say that without the steel handled scoops we use we would not have found a thing - we had to dig through rocks and sand for every target tonight. So it was one of those days where you got to do everything you wanted to - can't wait for the next one!

Thank you Joao! Glad to see a detectorist from Brasil on our forum!

Here is the latest edition to the Team Bogam arsenal - I am joining the Goldpick brigade with this Minelab Explorer II that Sa_Bogan picked up for a steal!

Better test it out tonight - I now face the big learning curve again with a new machine to get used to ...

Gday guys,

Although I am still a rookie and my finds are as yet no where as impressive as some of the others in this thread, after 2 visits to my local beach across the road and tot pit, this is the sum of my keepers.

Am figuring my local beach has already been picked clean, barley any trash or good signals to be had, will have to head to Balmoral or Manly to amp it up a bit now untli the summer crowds arrive.

Did also find 2 tiny pull tabs down about 3" in wet sand, so at least I know the detector is working..

Hi UBB

I can tell you that your finds look exactly the same as mine did when I first started!

The beach is never picked clean - but sometimes the tide dumps a lot of sand on the beach which puts the targets too deep to detect...

Here is a good tip for you as it has worked for me. Find a beach which is close to you (so you can visit it often without driving too far) and make a point of visiting it at least twice a week for a whole year. Make this beach your study area and take note of what areas you find targets - Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring. The beach will change many times in a year. Become a "resident" of that beach - own it - and learn how the beach works. Then when it changes you can determine that straight away which will point you in the direction of the treasure. Often the treasure is in the shallow water - not on the beach. Get a waterproof coil if your machine is not waterproof and start looking there. Once you complete your beach study you will have taught yourself enough from your experiences to start rocking up at any beach and find the targets without too much effort. Even we come up empty handed UBB - but two nights later and it's a different ball game. Don't give up - and consider night detecting if you think other looters are cleaning the place out. Not many looters will venture out at night as they either go to bed early or are too scared to do it. Either way it leaves the place to yourself... ;)

Thanks for the tips PM, will give that a try, Balmoral is actually right around the corner and gets used a fair bit, might make that the local. The coil I have is a waterproof 6" 18.75 attached to an xterra 305, have not ventured into the water yet, was trying to get the skills up on land first :) plus I dont have a long handled scoop, need to figure out a method to get target out of sand/water without getting control box wet and if I move to put down detector on land, I loose target lol :p

Im sure there is a method for easy retrevial, from what I gather, its a scoop on a broomstick.

I actually went out last night at 9pm for 45min, was a great night for a stroll along the beach.

Hi UGB. I am surprised that you can use the 305 on wet sand, least of all, in the water .mine used to false something chronic, regardless of adjustments. whether the 6 inch coil can make the difference, I don't know. yes, any moisture in the control box will be a major problem. some posts on a U.S. forum even suggest the sea air may be a long term problem thru condensation etc. I have decided to get a Tesoro sand shark, waterproof, for that reason, and price. do a search on the forum and net for beach/sand scoops. HH

Saturday night and 23 degrees so Team Bogan out for another hunt ... Tonight had a couple of "firsts" for detecting for me...I took the Explorer out for its maiden run and along with the CTX here are our finds ...

The Explorer didn't disappoint finding a gold ring on its second target for the evening - my first 22 carat ring - GOLD BABY!

There were a dozen coins with five predecimals - a florin, a 1916 shilling, and a three pence needing a clean along with some toasty large pennies, brown buggers and a couple of moderns. Of course a silver plated spoon - a toy lead cannon - and a couple of sinkers - we think we may have found a rusty spur for a cowboy boot (that's our best guess) and of course a bit of junk...

At least I know the Explorer finds gold - the CTX found the silver tonight ... So a bit of beginners luck with the ring on the first night out ... Can't wait to see what else it finds this week!

Must have been beginners luck heh! ;) Well done, good to see the Explorer doing its thing, how did you find it compared to the Sovereign with the target ID's etc?

To be honest I started with the screen before noticing that the battery drains a bit faster with the back light always on so I turned it off and was detecting on the sounds mostly and found it is similar to the Sovereign - the gold gave a low tone while coins and lead were much higher and of course is nulls out on iron. I thought I would have a bigger learning curve and bogan was dreading going out tonight thinking I would be "needy" as the digital display of the Explorer is similar to the CTX but I pretty much treated it like the Sovereign and off I went! I think I will probably not use the display as much as I imagined I would. Still much to learn!

I have the 1800mah battery, and you can easily run the screen backlighting all night if need be, but generally I just listen for the mid to high tones and confirm with the screen. Maybe now the weather is warming up, I shouldn't be such a wuss and hit the water! :D

You are more than welcome to borrow my Andy Sabisch Explorer/Etrac book, it's a really good read. Give me a hoy if you want to meet up or something.

Thanks GP - coincidentally the detector purchase included that very book signed by the author! I have been reading it with interest! ;)

Ah cool, no worries then. Funny thing is, after reading that book on the various discrimination patterns used by people around the globe, I still prefer just working off an open screen. Running discrimination in junky areas simply ends up with too much nulling which I find may mask some targets. Might be better where you are working though, a bit less junk there than on land.
