Jannine went in the Nowra Mud Muster on Saturday. It was a 10 km run with a whole lot of muddy obstacles, walls and so on. I was the driver and support person.

We stayed in Nowra, and had a good night at the North Nowra Tavern, as the publican's wife is a friend of Jannines.

The dehydration from the run and a bottle or more of cheap champagne meant that J. was a bit second hand this morning, she could not even manage a coffee and hotcake at Maccas. A coke did her some good though. I did OK with a couple of strong coffees and an English Breakfast wrap.

We stopped at the Nerriga Pub for a beer for me and another coke and a packet of chips for J, who was starting to come good, and then checked out the new bridge, camping and fossicking areas at Oallen Ford. Unusually, there were no sluices or panners to be seen, although the access to the big bar and camping area was good. There was more water running than at the meetup in November last year.

Anyway, J. took the pic below of me enjoying a beer at the Nerriga pub, I can't go past the place without stopping for a schooner. For comparison, I've included a pic of me and J. at a function back in 2007. Somewhat of a difference, and I don't expect to get that big again!

Great journey there Dr.Duck and I was gonna say thay bloke in the top pic looks a bit thinner than the profile dr.duck and then I scrolled down! Big changes mate and congrats for such an effort :) did you get the chance to throw the pan in at Oallen?

Thanks for sharing mate

Can I ask you Dr.Duck on what your loss method was? After seeing what you cook in the cooking thread I'm sure its possibly to do with that

I've got high metabolism and have never had the problem but as I age I have concerns for degenerative diabeties so I still have to be careful to prevent it.

If its only a few mins away have a pan for me too mate :)

Thanks Jaros

AR, my method was a low carb, high fat diet. All I did was avoid all sugar, and eat very little if any bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, etc.

Basically, I eat eggs, sausages and bacon for breakfast every day. My diet is based on meat, fish, chicken, eggs, nuts, green veg and salads. Bit like paleo, but I do have dairy.

I eat less than 100 g of carbs a day, and often 60g. If I'm on the road and have to eat Maccas, I'll have one of those wraps for breakfast, as it is around 30 g carbs. A quarter pounder is 33g carbs. Obviously no chips of soft drink, except for the odd coke zero. You have to take into account the actual carb content of foods, not the weight of the bread, for example, you are thinking of eating, which is around 50% carbs. If the girls are having chips, I might have one or two, just to get the flavor.

If you don't eat carbs, you do need to increase the fat component of the diet, and I eat and cook in butter, olive oil, lard, beef dripping and coconut oil. No probs with nice rich cheese, and I eat it with those really thin round crackers, as 5 or so of those is only a few grams of carbs.

It is a good diet, and I have not got sick of eggs for breakfast, or eating big steaks for dinner. I notice that I don't get hungry between meals and don't get sleepy after lunch any more. It takes a little while to get used to it, but I have adapted quite well now.

I do miss good bread and pizza, and for a treat have a thin pizza. The Geoff Janze brand of pizza bases from Woolworths was only 45g carb or so, but they have dropped them unfortunately. I used to make my own pizza bases which were pretty good, but a bit too carby, - probably around 120g.

I do go to the gym 4 days a week and do relatively heavy strength based training. Not much cardio. On gym days I generally have a low carb protein shake when going to bed.

The reason for all this was getting diabetes, and I think I posted recently on the what I cooked thread that my blood sugar was 28 when I got diagnosed, which is through the roof. All good now though, and I did not have to go on insulin.

If you are a diabetic and the dietician is telling you to eat plenty of complex carbs, I reckon that is bad advice. There is now plenty of research establishing that a low carb diet is the best way to manage diabetes.

If you want to lose weight and are not diabetic, you can get along OK with a diet with more carbs than I have.

Thanks Duck. I have Type2 but am unable to move around too much due to my back ops. and bunion problem (12 mths on). I hope to lose my weight when i can be a bit more mobile.
Great explanation Dr.
Jaros :p

Hey Dr Duck, great effort and a big congratulations.
It's amazing how things like this can change a man's life, well done.
GLUTEN is the biggest killer in our world we live in.
It all started when scientists genetically modified "wheat "
Check out gluten and it's effects on the human body.

Yep Jaros, you have to be careful if you have had a back operation. I used to get a bad back a few times a year, but it is much better now I have got stronger. For the first 18 months in the gym I had a personal trainer every time, which meant that I learned how to do it all properly. You see a lot of new gym members who go at it like a bull in a china shop, hurt themselves or blow a poofle valve, and you never see them again. A good trainer can work with you to work around or improve issues like a crook back or shoulder.

Back in the day, if I ever got the feeling that I should go to the gym, I'd go and lie down till it passed.

Those shows like the biggest loser have a lot to answer for in promulgating the idea that to lose weight you have to do lots of excessive and painful cardio. The best approach is strength training, which you can get done in a 30-45 minute gym visit. I do minimal cardio, maybe a warm up on the rowing machine.

Thanks Uncle Bob. There is a lot of discussion on gluten, and I reckon we eat far too much grain based foods. My other half did her PhD on Coeliac disease, which is an autoimmune gluten intolerance, so she knows quite a lot about it.

That's true but the thing about gluten is that we have been lied to and the truth hidden in the name of money and same goes for sugar.
These people need to be locked away as money is more important than people's health.
Ooh man..........the list goes on and on and on.......... 8)

Years and years ago watching Landline, they were showing how these experts in the name of science and mankind did the unthinkable and started to genetically modify corn, wheat, ect ect ect.......
Since then more and more people are getting sick and dying more frequently because of these scientists contribution to "MAN"
Ooooooch...........

Dr Duck,
You need to be Careful when having beef.
Try getting grass fed beef.
A lot of beef is grain fed.

Yep Uncle Bob,

I'm lucky to have a local butcher who raises his own steers, all grass fed square meaters (Murray greys), has 'em killed at the abs, and dry ages the meat. It is a beautiful product.

York foods here in Goulburn is the main dripping and lard producer in Australia, and they have a beautiful grass fed beef dripping that I use in cooking.

I try to stay away from supermarket meat whenever possible.
