Mining or Forestry Equipment ?

We own a farm that has a history going back to the mid 1800s, as a consequence there is all sorts of relics lying around. One of these is a wooden windlass, What are the opinions of the forum experts, was it used in mining or as part of a sawmill, both were present around the area.

I wouldn't know, but what an interesting place you have.All I've got is an old shepherds type hut, but may have been used for fisherman rather than shepherds still haven't finished detecting around it and have owned the place for 21 years how slack is that.

i would go towards log hauler because the mining ones were usually smaller and lighter weight.

Yours is heavy duty.

you will find old pictures on google of windlass's above mine shafts , you will see the difference in size.

I'd go with some sort of old winch/windlass, central holes would be for the winching handles and a bucket either end, rope through the holes so one comes up, the other goes down to create a partial counter balance.
