Good reasoning, I agree. I don't think the thickness would be an issue either, unless your in an area with alot of black sand. Providing the slurry is exposed to the mats surface it should function fine.
 
Got home safely and in one piece from Westfield/Big W and bonded with the missus. Spag mats came in a few colours...went with the poo brown to match the breadcrate riffles.

I now have both types of spag mat to test and trial.
