Anyone know how NSW ground mineralisation levels compare with other states? Specificially Orange/Bathurst/Dubbo etc etc. Ive heard WA and VIC are the worst.

Cheers

Hi Tubsy,
This is true that Vic an WA are the most mineralised, which is why historically they have produced the most gold, however all of Australia is. Our country was one of the most active in the world both volcanically and Tectonically and still remains so off the east coast.

If you can Access geothermal images like those on Geovic website for NSW it will give you a great indication of where to start looking.
Faults are your friend, especially in sedimentary areas!!

Understanding the types of layers and periods of time deposits occurred will assist you too. Knowledge is power my friend....only today its so easy to get hold of.????

I have driven to NSW from Vic many times and have seen some amazing examples of outcrops and heavy mineralisation that exists there. I have many samples to crush too.?

I hope that helps in some way.

Happy hunting mate.
Cheers

Tubsy, is that what you are actually asking? Or are you referring to the proble, of ironstone when detecting as "mineralisation"

Yep, iron mineralisation, magnetite, maghemite mainly but I guess there are others - sulphide ores etc. If only I had paid more attention to my geology at school:)

Since you are referring to iron etc I assume that you are interested in the problems this presents for metal detecting. If so, I would think WA and some parts of Victoria and NT and western Queensland would be worst. The iron that causes the problem is typically ferricrete or "laterite", iron that concentrated in the soil during a period of high rainfall in the past. In much of eastern Australia, uplift of mountain ranges has caused that iron to be weathered and eroded away, so it is not much of a problem - it seems fairly minor in areas like Orange and Bathurst for that reason. In Victoria it mainly remains north of the divide and west from the Calder highway (so much more of an issue around say Wedderburn and Stawell than Ballarat or Woods Point). Of course a smaller proprtion of iron occurs as local major concentrations formed in other ways, so can locally be an issue, rather than a regional issue. For example, a lot of iron around Tennant Creek is hydrothermal as well as weathering-related.

When I say "I would think" I am referring to the problem of spurious responses that need tuning out (I have worked in all the areas that I mention above so KNOW that the ironstone itself is there, or not there, respectively). You particularly refer to Orange, Dubbo, Bathurst and I have spent years exploring there (the other non-weathering type of ironstone type of ironstone does occur locally there - hydrothermal magnetite as in the Cadia iron "skarns" near Orange or similar rocks north from Gulgong neart Leadville etc, and minor iron gossans well east of Cudgegong- but is not a regional issue). I would not think you would have much trouble through Hill End, Hargraves, Windeyer, Gulgong, Lucknow, Ophir, Sofala and west from the river at Cudgegong, especially in hilly areas.
