They're locally termed "Silver Spinel" and are of the Spinel family. GG has quite a few of this variety. They facet or cab quite well.

Thanks guys, this type of spinnel I could Imagine would cut very nicely. Put aside refractive index but keep in mind reflective index
 
I have seen some facetted that look hands down the best black facetted gemstones. They also have very high hardness, so are hard wearing. I have a couple of kilos of larger stones 10-30 carats and up that I've been saving to make a matched facetted set... one day :)
