Minelabs on Special

Minelab specials are popping up like mushrooms now. SDC2300's have just come down to $3,750 on eBay (with free postage), from Central West Prospecting Supplies: "We only have three left at this fab price".

Good eye mate hadn't noticed that one. Someone was trying to unload a barely used SDC for $3800+$100 postage on ebay. Was buy it now until this deal just popped up and he's been forced to change it to best offer.

Hahaha. newness or technology ? the Tesoro Compadre is 5 months old, the model came out in 2000 from memory.
the m/l sovereign xs is about 1994. however, that just- proves - my point exactly you can by a new compadre which is 14 years old in technology. My sovereign is only old in design, cosmetics. BBS-FBS, is still current technology , like 23 years old.
the first SOV. was 90/91. what great change has been made in vlf detectors ? Fisher patented his first model in about 1931, that used several vacuum tubes.
P.I.s are still rudimentary [ more crudimentary], no major advancements either. Alexander Graham Bell came up with the concept of a metal detector in 1881. Ho Hum. :|

Having bought a 2nd hand 2300 unit for 3k I'm happy with that deal, selling the 5000 with many coils for less than 5.3k 8-( but it is what it is, bring on the next unit

I gotta admit Slipped Disc the Tesoro's do have a unique discrimination. Good for coins and relics. And yeah, the old Sovs can still hold their own out there too. It makes me laugh though the SDC. I know it finds small gold good but its just a rehashed mine detector. Probably the left over stock from MLabs lost mine detector contract a couple of years ago. I don't believe it was purpose built like the SD's and GP series machines. Just rehashed and tricked up to handle goldfields. Why ditch all the stock when we can rehash it and sell it to the public?? Tiny armrests that collapse all the time, coil shaft connection point that gets caught up on brush and sticks, talk about a leap backwards in design! Used one for a couple of days, what a pain with birdshot. Probably a boomer idea though for the guys making accessories for them to make them more user friendly out there

Despite this thread being about "Minelab Specials" it has now descended into yet another whinge & whine about Minelab pricing & technology, or perceived lack of, from the usual antagonists with the usual necessary negative statements slipped in about the SDC?
- If its just a rehashed mine detector I invite yourself or anyone else to grab a F3 & come do a comparison. Central NSW goldfields & a side bet to boot? Anyone?
- the only similarities to the F3 are the cosmetic appearance. The F3 operates on MPS technology the SDC on MPF. There is no doubt the internals are purpose built for gold detecting rather than mine detecting
- the armrest is designed to collapse so it folds up. It is easily held open with several easy fixes

Not sure what your on about here. Did you have the round thing on the ground? :lol: Leap back in design - from what? The SD/GP/GPX because their so user friendly & portable?

Each of them has required aftermarket accessories to enable me to use them to my personal preference or to aid small issues. No detector I have owned has been without things that could be improved on, including the GPX, & the SDC is no different.

If you can't or don't want to pay for a Minelab get over it, move on & stop trolling threads with off topic comments This thread has nothing to do with the Tesoro or the SDC issues, which are covered in several other more relevant topics that include sensible, practical solutions from valued members - some of which don't seem to contribute much these days? Probably got sore heads?

I feel minelab have picked the wrong time of year for this Xmas special .. Now those wanting to sell their machines won't have a chance at getting a sale I feel .. Could this special have been done after Xmas as Boxing Day specials . Or mid year ,, hmmm ..
What are the prices going to be after this Xmas deal is done .. And will it devalue your gpx5000 and sdc2300 ..

It will be dependent on the price after the special is over? Don't know but the 5000 used price will drop & then probably recover a little as has happened with previous machine releases. Looking at the other special, SDC & xterra, I don't think that the SDC2300 price new will drop too much after the specials?
Good time to buy - possibly bad time to sell? Bit like real estate. Sometimes the best time to buy a house is also the worst time to sell your old one.

I agree with Matt, the 5k price will recover a bit when the sale ends, depending on the price and release date of the new one of course.

Also agree that it always seems to be the people least likely to buy a certain detector that bag it the most. People who own them are happy and finding Gold.

Mostly I come here for the info and the sharing. Occasionally the comedy doesn't make it under the comedy topic. If minelab had a 30 to 40% off retail sale there would be one in the kit of 3 out of 4 prospectors, not just detectorists. Anyone bashing off topic clearly has zero inclination to purchase one, mostly because they can't see why you would use one period. You could teach a ten year old to detect with an Sdc. And what do the guys that make a decent go of it digging up the nuggets (those beautiful tax free lumps of cash trade commodity) use in many more cases than not. ...5000s. I'm yet to see those talking about outdated tech bring out something better or more value for money. Next time you see a bloke out on a fishing charter go verbally abuse the skipper or the boat owner, at least then you'll be showing some consistency. ... The bloody things cost less than a half decent used family car.

On topic I reckon the deal was bloody good value over retail and although I feel for some caught out by the drop I hope a few get on to enjoy some good pricing.

Specials always come in when sales start to seasonally drop. Try selling a snow plow in the peak of summer! But drop the price or throw in a trip to Hawaii and it will tempt some. I think this is the bargain of the century. I'm picturing two prospecting buddies swinging say a Eureka Gold and a SD2100, been wanting to trade up for a while - now is the time to strike! Trade both units in on the GPX and SDC deal, split the difference and start mopping up all the nuggets, and see what the new machine has to offer when released.

back on topic... this deal is absolutely fantastic, yes you can find gold with an Aldi special but anyone doing a little research knows that the 2 best detectors to own at the moment are the SDC 2300 and the GPX 5000, they compliment each other well, they both have the best chance of paying for themselves and the only thing that will stop them finding gold is operator error
With Christmas coming up the only question is, who can be convinced to buy them for me?

Good point, imagine actually bringing out a new detector that is superior in design and performance however it would be cheaper than a gpx... You would sell a lot more of them. I've always wondered how much the cost of the electrical components are that the detector is constructed of. I know you pay for technology to an extent etc. none the less exciting times ahead !
