Hope it works out for you!
If the seller cannot provide the serial number or it is missing from the machine + no original invoice or receipt then the alarm bells should have been deafening! To be frank I can understand Minelabs stance & any machine purchased used with warranty remaining should have the warranty transferred to the new owners name - that is the buyers responsibility unfortunately not Minelab's!
For anyone looking to buy a newer Minelab machine like GPX4500/4800/5000 or SDC2300 or GPZ7000 etc. that would have warranty remaining the following thread would be a helpful read:
https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5333
Although it focuses specially on the GPX5000 many of the checks & transfer process remain the same for any of the newer Minelab machines including those not gold specific.
The main points are:
Checklist for making a purchase (especially off eBay, Gumtree etc. or used):
Get the serial number
Get the place/date of purchase details - ask for an invoice
If possible check the security sticker hologram
Verifyallof the details with Minelab - don't just check the serial number as some fakes have a correct number on them. Get Minelab to cross reference it with the other details like place of purchase/date of purchase etc. They can & will supply this info.
If you have the hologram:
Go to the SMS function on your mobile phone
Enter the number: + 61 458 727 727 into the 'To' field
In the text field enter: Product Serial Number press SPACE then enter the hidden word or code from your security label
Press Send
Await response from Minelab
Once you pay (or even beforehand with the sellers ok) immediately contact Minelab to transfer any warranty that may be remaining on the machine into your name. Minelab warranty is transferrable & is quick/easy to do.
ALWAYS REGISTER OR TRANSFER THE WARRANTY IN YOUR NAME ASAP AFTER PURCHASING!!
ALARM BELLS:
Seller won't/can't supply serial number
Seller won't/can't supply purchase details/invoice
Seller does not offer inspection or pick up
1 or more checks can't be verified by Minelab
Font looks unusual/different
The price seems "to good to be true"
Spelling mistakes or incorrect sentences on labelling

Sorry if this seems like a "good in hindsight" post but if the above can stop situations like this then that is better than having someone read this & still not be sure how they can prevent similar occurring to them. Barring buying from an authorised dealer as Nightjar said the above process is the only way to go about buying a used machine in my opinion.
I hope it turns out legit & everything gets sorted but it doesn't sound good. If nothing else hopefully it will serve as a reminder to others & prevent similar situations.
