Oh Jemba don't go mate, I know it's hard when people just don't get a point of view, I certainly do and stick by it. That's the trouble in Australia over the years, too much of this......self centered attitude....we never used to be like that.

Your mate

Isolation, that's good that you find some color and you and your girl have fun, but mate you don't own it the dirt. First come first serve, this attitude...it's mine is what we're on about, an unwritten code of ethics and morals. Let's keep this respect and keep a good name for prospectors.

Mate, you have totally missed my point. I 100% agree. I don't own the dirt, and neither does the person who put a bucket there. If someone is there when I turn up, I may stop and say hello, but I will go and work somewhere else.

Sorry if i misunderstood, but I have seen it on Youtube too, where they leave a bucket in the hole their digging with a name and date and time, probably while they go have lunch or something, no I agree the person who put the bucket there doesn't either, just like when at Gympie my mate and I leave our digging equipment in the hole we dig, because the creek is about 30-40 mtrs away. I would hope if someone comes along they would realize and have the courtesy to know someone is digging there and there are other spots. Just as next time if they are digging there, I will find another spot. Us old school were brought up in a different era, where a handshake was your word, and there was a lot more respect back then. Hope this makes sense, hard to put into words.

That's a different situation to what I was describing, and yes I agree again, hopefully common sense and courtesy would apply.

I don't think anyone is saying that they want to jump right in someones hole they just dug, you just can't claim a huge area and scare others off from having a dig is what's being said.

Extract from wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_South_Wales_gold_rush
"A monthly fee of 30 shillings was difficult to pay when the size of the claim per miner allowed only 13 surface square metres". That is the size of a claim during the gold rush.

Anyway it's meant to be a hobby is the whole point.

Where's silver to unwrittenately moderate this topic 8) :D

Everyone is entitled to there opinion, i think it may of gone of track a little with specifics.

you need to respect your fellow fossicker and dont jump in his/her hole. If you see a bucket/pick/shovel/sieve/thong/stubby/gpz7000 in a hole, it is most likely that someone is working it and dont jump in their hole and start working the hard work they have already put in.

Quote from Treasure Enterprises of Australia website

"In Queensland there is over 28.5 million acres of gold-bearing country. For a person with a gold/metal detector covering 1 acre per day ... it would take over 78,000 years to complete!"

What about the rest of Australia?

The answer: Over 300,000 years

Please play nicely. After all isn't that what this topic is all about? :/

I hope not mate! It would be a ****** old world without mutual respect and that was the point you were trying to make regardless of unwritten rules & everyones 2 cents worth, including my own.

Bit extreme mate? I can't see anything here to leave over. In essence I think we all agree with your main point & intention to highlight the need for courtesy + respect for fellow prospectors/fossickers.
You did ask for people's thoughts on the subject & just because some aren't 100% supportive of all your points doesn't mean we are against you or what you post. Personally I thought it was a good topic & discussion that at the least might make people think about their interactions with others out in the field, especially in well used areas.
I can see your point too with having a bit of a buffer zone but I've never heard of any unwritten 30m rule etc. I've always been respectful enough to not touch other people's gear or get too close to their "spot". My point was that some situations aren't always black & white either so courtesy needs to come from both sides. Nothing I said was meant as a personal attack on you or your topic - just my thoughts as requested.

Mutual respect to me it is a way of life to which I operate under and always will. 30 meters, 30 feet, 3 meters, 10 feet who cares as long as a reasonable distance is maintained between digs. If a new chum is not informed of this how is it expected for him to know hence the need for this line of post. The end result would have been and I hope it still will be, been able to avoid a situation which would darken any trip. I have enjoyed sharing information and I will with draw my resignation.. Good on ya Jemba, your experience and advice is invaluable and very much appreciated, glad you're staying.....It's our gain. I'm like you I have been big on respect and honor for a very long time, and I won't lessen that for anything or anybody. If we all showed love and respect in this world it would be a much better place, putting others first this is what my God wants me to do and I do it to the best of my ability.

Jemba,
I have been watching this and if you did not withdraw your resignation, I would have tried to talk you out of it.
Face To Face Cobber.
You have posted some the best information on here and to see you come to an end with a disagreement would be really Sad.
I would refuse to do it. LOL
.
What you are saying and your point is, When on a dig with others, Give each other some breathing space.
Flog it into the youngsters as not a lot of this common respect on a Gold Field are known these days.
Heck, Back in the roaring days, You would either get your head knocked of or shot and dropped down a shaft. 8)

Sooo.... has anyone tried taking a dump in their hole to mark their spot? It is nature's way! I seriously doubt that someone would take over your hole when there are so many other alternatives.

Thanks mate, over the years i have seen and once been involved in an ugly situation and believe me people do not want to go down that road it's not good at all. The best way to avoid that kind of situation is by education. Let the new guys know that you will respect their right as long as they return the same level of respect shown to them. See you at the Ford rain or shine. cheers mate
.
Mod Edit,
All Organized Cobber.
Just got to get hold of my Nephew.
