Aries Thanks for the advice I need to go to a mobile shop to get a sim card to get the best reception so could pick a phone upWilf,
In regards to the GPS, i know some will disagree but nowadays I think a second mobile phone is of more use.
All topo (and geo) maps can be downloaded onto a phone with apps that are used frequently here (Trilobite, Happy Prospector).
Most handheld GPS only offer rudimentary maps.
The apps we use all offer "tracking " so you can retrace your steps.
A PLB would be worth considering as well ( i use SPOT).
I do have a GPS but find that it sits in glovebox of wagon all the time as i just take a fully charged phone when wandering on foot.
The GPS function on phones works even without signal reception.
Thanks sounds like a good idea. And if im going to be a Statistic I hope its towards the end of my trip lolA PLB is a Personal Locator Beacon.
You register it with AMSA. Do not go wandering aroung in the outback without one. Otherwise you may become another statistic.
