Went out field walking for a couple of days in Cambrai, North France. At Bullecourt where the Australian trenches where located here are some of the finds.

Shrapnel balls from shells, copper scraps from the shells and a brass rivet from a German Helmet.

Interesting, gives me the shivers to think those balls were flying about, cutting people to pieces, not a place you would want to be.

It would be a special feeling digging things up from such an event, and being the first person to see and touch them since.

Looks like canister shot. Also see a bit of a clay pipe stem in there?

Be very carefull when you detect those area.
Grenade or connon shell are still dangerous.

And the autorities don't like people doing metal detecting those days, so stay hidden, that's the best advice I can give you.

Do you live in France or are you just travelling?

All the finds where laying on top of the ground recorded them an returned back to the field afterwards no point in bringing them back home they belong there.

It would be worth detecting were you found the pottery, if the land owner is OK with it.
Some look quite ancient, the grey one could be Roman.
