Hi all,

Just thought I'd introduce myself to you all. I'm a working goldsmith in Northumberland, UK. We have our own shop designing and making bespoke jewellery. I have always had a fascinating interest in Opals and love working with them. We have recently returned back from an amazing trip buying stones at Tucson gem show and bought some gorgeous opals from a dealer who specialising in black opals from Lightning Ridge.

Since leaving school back in 1980's I was so close to going out to Australia in the hunt for Opals but I never seemed to to have the guts to actually make the step. Now at 47 and still I have not visited your country I am starting to think I should make the plunge. It turns out I have family over with you and an old school mate who lives in Brisbane so really there is no excuse.

I suppose the dream would be to get to go down a working mine and find something.

Anyway joining this forum is the first step :)

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum. I see it's currently 2 degrees (app- minus 2deg) where you are. It's 29C here in Brisbane at the moment.
Hope you can make you trip over.
Cheers Jaros. :p

Welcome Rob, it's never too late to take the plunge, life is too short to be indecisive on such things. Make it happen and I'm sure you won't regret it. :)

Hello Rob,
Don't be afraid of this dangerous and deadly country of ours, nor your colonial cousins here down under.
Book a ticket and live the dream mate:)
Welcome to the forum.
Cheers Stevt;)

thanks for the warm welcome guys, its not a case of IF but WHEN I visit. I've got to say Jaros that a 29C temp is very appealing this time of year. I also like your dog who can sniff out nuggets ;-) very clever. Not sure what the rules are regarding fossicing these days? or even where best to go? I have no mining experience, I seem to have concentrated my efforts turning the gold and opals into pieces of jewellery over the last 25 years.

I am sure that the guys can help you get started in Australia... very happy to see a craftsman joining our merry group... I am sure you will have some great advise to share with us in return.. welcome mate. :)

it goes without saying, anyone needing advise on design, jewellery making and stone setting please get in touch, I'd be more than happy to help out. Cheers, Rob
