Yep, use a tripod or something that will make a stand for the camera and move the subject into the camera until you have best definition, taking into consideration light and shadow.

You can lay your camera over a glass to get a nice still shot.... takes the shake out of the picture so to speak(pun intended)

Aura quartz is natural or synthetic qtz that has be treated with the addition of various metallic elements.
If your rock is straight out of the ground then it is not Aura qtz..
You could possibly do an specific gravity check. Ruby is 4 or very close to it and qtz is 2.65.
If you have a uv lamp it may light up the stone a nice red if it is ruby.
