I am not sure how many mechinics we have on the forum ? I hope a few and this may become a helpful thread.

I can solve alot of mechinal and engineering problems but at the moment i need a diff expert to solve a puzzle for me ,
i have a intermittent howling in my rear end :( from my troubleshooting i believe its the pinion bearing as thats the only area with heat . I mate of mine recons i can replace the bearing without stripping the diff as it comes in from the front or tail shaft end , but i am not convinced as there would be nothing to keep the shaft and bearing from moving foward apart from the tail shaft .

So do we have some helpful mechinics onboard the forum ?

Havent drained it, only opened the level plug , theres zero lateral play in yoke so i dont think its chewing metal yet it only started 100ks ago and being intermittent its probably only been noisy for 2ks.
 
If the front pinion bearing is shot you are going to have metal through the oil and the rest of the diff as well. Unless you are experienced at setting up diffs a replacement centre from a reputable wrecker will be your best option, Dont forget to wash out the housing as well.
 
Diffs are easy to set up, all you need is a Dial Gauge with a magnetic base, you can buy them pretty cheap and as long as you have a big enough Vice then ya set.

just been making some calls and they have said the same thing
if you dont know what you are doing you could end up in a world of hurt better to get a replacement center ether reco or wreckers

Which shouldn't be done as they have a squash collar in them and you can lock the diff up from over tightening :rolleyes:

As far as the question goes AF no :eek:
Has it got oil in it, top it up with a thicker oil and see if it quietens, like a 120w ;)
Don't put bananas in it :rolleyes: :eek:

Thats what i was after :Y: i said to my mate " you mean replacing the seal ?" But he reckoned the bearing from the front :rolleyes: , i thought he must be a magician to get the inner bearing collar off the pinion whilst it was in the housing :lol:
I will be fixing my center as its only got 200,000ks on it and the backlash feels good and doesnt whine at all :Y: plus i rather the devil i know than a random 2nd hander.
Might get some qoutes because i hate working on cars as i do more than plenty on tractors, headers and other machinery.

don't know I'd like to own the vehicle it had been done to though :eek: :lol: 2000kms and it starts leaking oil :lol:

Cant help mate , i was a holden man :Y: i still have some fine splined axles and bits and peices but i dont like parting with the memories :) unless its for a good cause and a quick squirt down the tarmac :lol:
