What's your favourite IDRIESS book? Mine is 'Prospecting for Gold and other minerals and precious stones.'
What a great Australian writer he was and he wrote a lot. His gold books are very good.

I only have the one you mention - would be interested in other books/essays he's written. Definately a great read, have read it twice & sometimes refer back to it. Love it when he talks about what to carry on your pack-horse. Great history & great information.

I'm a BIG FAN!!!!!!!. "Prospecting for gold "is a prospectors bible. I have "gold dust and ashes" and "Back o cairns" also great reading. His complete collection sold for $ 30,000 on ebay.

Ion Llewellyn Idriess, OBE (20 September 1889 6 June 1979) was a prolific and influential Australian author. He wrote more than 50 books over 43 years between 1927 to 1969 - an average of one book every 10 months, and twice published three books in one year (1932 and 1940). His first book was Madman's Island, published in 1927 at the age of 38, and his last was written at the age of 79. Called Challenge of the North, it told of Idriess's ideas for developing the north of Australia.

The Mining and Prospecting series
A series of four titles which were basically "how-to" works, the first being commissioned by the Australian government as a means of opening up of the "outback" during the depression years.
Prospecting for Gold (1931)
Cyaniding for Gold (1939)
Fortunes in Minerals (1941)
Opals and Sapphires (1967)

He was a prolific author - here is his wikipedia link. (cut and paste)

They can be hard to get and the first editions in good condition and signed are expensive. I have a paperback version of Prospecting.

"Prospecting for Gold" is one of my dunny books .
Always have a flick through whilst sitting on the throne contemplating life.
Seem to always find a bit of relevant info that might have skimmed over or has slipped out of the grey matter.

Hi loamer,

He is well known around the opal book circuit for sure. We have an extensive opal book collection with a few of his great old books on opal and Lightning Ridge as a part. I'll grab the names of those tomorrow and post them up, hopefully early on as we have a buyer coming to look at buying the collection tomorrow -so I was just informed. Some are very valuable today in good condition, particularly the signed first editions as you say.

I have a couple of later reprinted editions sitting here just off hand (not part of our collection).

The black covered one on the right was the first book written on Lightning Ridge back in 1940.
I'll have to check for any gold books of his I may have here also. Great writer for his time.

Kindest regards,
Shauno.

Elrodeo's comment: 'best dunny book'.

That made me chuckle. It could start a whole new topic - 'Best Dunny Book'. Mine is always the Form Guide in the Herald-Sun.

Ion was a very interesting writer. I first read his "The Great Boomerang" an interesting tour through the outback and channel country, with a lot of history and observations on rain, floods and three potential of the inland. The book booseted the Bradfield scheme to feed water from Queensland coastal rivers over the divide and into the inland river systems heading to lake Eyre.

Other good ones were the Cattle King - a biography of Sid Kidman, and the Desert Column - the story of Ion's war service at Galloipoli and Europe during WW1.

I read Lasseters Last Ride as a teenager 45 years ago - it gave me "the fever"

CASPER

tempted to buy it but i have a pile of other books gathering dust at my reading chair so i am trying to be more selective

would you describe it as pure fiction or closer to a historical account of lasseters travels ?

It's not written as fiction but closer to an historical account, feels like Idriess himself was captivated by the mystery....
