Hi all,
I have been interested in fossicking for a while but I have had very little free time, but after a job change this has allowed my work life balance to improve so I took the opportunity and purchased an ACE 250 plus a Garret AT pro pin pointer after a lot of deliberation. I live in Adelaide very close to Semaphore with the ability to travel and was hoping 1 off the Adelaidian PRO's might be able to provide a little assistance into the basics of this fascinating/ compelling hobbie.
I have been out a couple of time now only finding trash and lots of signals that seem to have no point of origin, I watch videos and read articles but I am sure a bit of one on one training would help me dramatically.

Well went out again tonight although I had another bag of trash I did break my duck with a 10cent piece, it's start, lots more beach to check out and treasure to find.

Hi Deano.
Welcome to the forum. It is an addictive hobby. Don't worry we all dig trash. Part of the game. Hopefully someone local to you will help you out.
The best thing is just to get out there and keep swinging and digging. Good luck.

Cheers

Are you using discrimination? Without it, the detector will constantly be making sounds. Try notching out every bar, but leaving the end 4. Add extra bars, as you get to understand the sounds, and what metals they indicate. Keep watching the ace 250 vids on youtube, and read the ace 250 threads here on the forum.

Rocketaroo - I am still using the unit in All Metal Mode as per recommendations (still only got 5hrs on the clock) but I am finding I need to constantly play with the sensitivity depending on sand/soil conditions or I tend to get random tones, I am impressed with its pin pointing mode and my Garret AT pro pin pointer is fantastic.

Who recommended to run all metal Dean ? Was that a suggestion to help you learn the machine perhaps ?
Anyway regardless , any machine in all metal in trashy areas will give out constant tones and the only way to eliminate that is to run with discriminate on .

Gday Deano

Have no experience at all with beach detecting so can't offer any assistance but the guys like SA Bogan and crew will probably come across this thread sometime and be able to offer up the local advice for you , in the mean time keep on enjoying your new hobby , Semaphore is a beaut place for a wander around

Cheers and good luck

Cheers GaryO,

in the user manual it states use in all metal mode until you have gained experience, I will however start playing the discrim although the beach is get very clean

Altho the beach may be clean , u may still strike foil etc that may have broken down to many bits and will drive you crazy .
Maybe while u are learning do the opposite with discrimination ON low.. and when u get a clear signal THEN switch over to all metal to hear and learn what the tone is like , that will speed up your learning curve and also make it more enjoyable in the process.

Welcome to the forum.

My favourite spots are the outskirts of parks and sporting fields, not on the play areas but the places where people sit, under trees are the best spots where there is shade I think. Usually proves true everytime. I'll wander from the sunny spots to the shade and whenever I get near a tree the coins start flowing.

Hope that helps.

Hello all I have always had a interest in detecting in Au. Maybe some day. Are there lots of retail shops that can help a person over there? I've heard there aren't that many. Curious. Les
