As for acid cleaning...how about half water and the other half white vinegar in a plastic bottle (such as a coffee jar) with 1-2 inches of silica (the kind construction companies carry). It worked good on a gold tie pin end clip, inside pin hole was solid mineral. Dug out of Arizona desert soil, soaking overnight 1-2 days, swirl around gently a few times each day then, with the silica in bottom.
