Hi ShinyAmy. One of the first things you might want to do is buy a gold panning dish and learn how to use it. They are useful for more than just gold. Then go out to your nearest creek dig up some gravel and pan it off.
You never know and may be surprised at what you might find in the bottom of the pan.
Got me interested when I was young panning around creeks near my home in the SE burbs of Melbourne and made me want to go further afield and developed a lifelong interest.
