Hi everyone, im Ryan ,currently on holidays up in the fraser coast region of qld , saying hello and just started researching hunting the yellow stuff, as yet to buy a detector but looking at possibly a garrett infinium or minelab safari or gold bug 2 for a starter machine for around a grand.Been watching too many gold shows on foxtel lol and consequently have the bug:) luckily i know some farmers with virgin property back home in sa so im hoping to check a few hundred acres of their places out :) cant stop researching gold detectors going nutsssssssss currently haha ,know the gpx 5 is the go but outta reach and hope the infinium goes close to as deep ,:-@ any info on that would be great, will be buying a machine in two weeks time if anyones got a good cheapie, and going a hunting near warwick courtesy of google maps lol  Ive been kicking but in the fishing department for years am hoping i can hunt the yellow just as good :)

Welcome Ryan,

It's good to see another crow eater join the forum.

a good place to start your research into detectors is at the Palmer Rockarama being held over the 1st weekend in May at the Palmer Oval. There will be various detector agents and coil manufacturers there and they all have machines on display and for sale at a discounted price for the weekend. At the Rockarama on the Sunday morning the SA metal detecting championship is being held. There are great prizes up for grabs you can even hire a detector and try it out. In the past some entrants have won new detectors using a hired detector for the first time. The Murraylands Gem & Mineral Club have sown a nearby paddock with medals and tokens etc. before last years crop went in. Now harvest is finished it's only waiting for the detector mob to come & try their luck.

Have a look at the Murraylands Gemclub site for details

Cheers :)

Hi doug thanks for the tip but ill still be in Qld unfortunately lol, yeah i know palmer pretty well even read theyve found a bit of yellow in the polar bear hills up there, wouldnt be a bad spot if you like moss rocks :p

Welcome to the forum Ryan. Chasing fish and chasing gold have a lot in common mate. It's all about the hunt and chasing new and better locations. The fish and the gold on many occasions are only the bonus. Sounds like the gold fever is biting strong and once that first nugget is unearthed there's no going back.

Hope the forum can answer any questions you may have, and look forward to possibly seeing some of your fish pics in the fishing section.

Best of luck out there in the big detecting paddock.

Cheers Wal.

Thanks Wal i didnt know there was a fishing section here lol but yeah cool am happy to upload some photos of some of my better catches from hervey bay (urangan pier) :) just got myself an infinium now just looking around for a 14inch mono for it :)

Great machine there mate and plenty of nuggets have succumbed to them. Got back not too long ago from a trip to Swains Reef. The fishing up that way leaves the tiddlers we get on the south coast for dead.

Hope the detector brings you many memorable hours of fun and best of luck with it.

Cheers Wal.

Nice yeah the fish up here certainly put SA jetty fishing to shame, was gonna buy a boat when i first got here but the jetty faired so good it wasnt warrented, looking around for a 8 or 14inch mono for the infinium, shame that coiltek or detech dont as far as i know make coils for these machines as far as i can find out, dont get me wrong jetty fishing in sa can be good ive got a tonne of 7kg+ snapper ,best being 103cm,at wallaroo jetty, also very large blue swimmers off the end, great amounts of large squid and snook from moonta bay and pt hughes, copper coast sa and stansbury (yorkes peninsula) the squid are generally large 2-3 ft long and hughes and moonta at night with a float jag ,1.5metre trace, and bag of big asian pilchards you can bag out anytime, unfortunately the larger sa jettys like pt giles, wallaroo, ardrossan are all controlled by overseas grain companies and somewhere along the line recreational fishers have been forgotten ,wallaroo jetty was the obly place in sa you could catch regular big snapper but grain companies restrixted access to the end :(

Closest Ive fished down that way was when i spent last week down at Murray Bridge for business. Spent the week on a great houseboat and fished each night.

Got about 2 dozen Callop (golden Perch / yellow belly) and about the same number of Catties, all on live shrimp. Pleasant section of the river down that way.

Cheers Wal.

ive caught some whopper callop there mate 55cm jobs and just down the road at caloote landing area where a mate of mine won the mannum fisherama in his tinny with his son with a big callop around 3.5kg the catfish and many other species washed down from the flood there a few years ago and the callop are really starting to get a stronghhold over the european carp in many areas youll now catch undersize or legal callip compared to a h undred carp lol ,as you said big live shrimp do the job :) if you ever fish any where else in sa send me a message before hand and ill give you some tips on the area youre going mate :)
