I'd like to run a 24v motor from a 240v supply for a portable flat lap machine. I guess I'd need a transformer or reducer of some sort but I'm not a sparky. Any ideas please ?

I think this is a similar setup to the Hy-Tech Diamond flat lap.

A 24V 10A (=240W) Battery Charger would run it. (200W at 24V = 8.33Amps)
or you need to buy a 240V AC to approx. 30V AC stepdown power supply then coupled with a rectifier to give DC of approx. 24V

Yeah, it's like that but only 200 watts (dc)

Overkill doesnt matter??
If you already have the motor, just search for the speed controller??

No, I don't have the motor yet, I'm just trying to find out how this can be done. So I'm hoping to run a 24v dc motor from a 240v a/c supply

Xcvator, not sure how this would go for speed etc, but have you considered something like a 240V roller door motor. You would need to make sure its suitable for continuous duty but if the load is light then it probably wouldn't be an issue.

I'ld like to help.

What does portable mean ?
Does it mean you can transport it easily or does it mean you can run it away from the mains ?

I always thought portable meant away from the mains with electrical equipment.
If you are running with mains supply handy , why not just use a washing machine motor or similar.
Peeps place w/mc's on their nature strip all the time - wouldn't be hard to find one - (except when you actually look for one)

Sorry people, I'll try and explain a bit better .

Portable = I can use it in my shed, kitchen or caravan
Size...I must be able to carry it easily and fit it into the boot of a car
Weight.....again, must be light weight ( under about 6 kg's )
Power draw must be minimal so I can run it from an auxiliary battery/inverter in my car
Noise.... must be very quiet to run in caravan parks

This what I would like to emulate

A washing machine motor would be ok but I don't know how heavy they would be or what the power draw would be like.

Why the slant machine ? I can't stand for very long in the 1 spot before my feet and back start to hurt, so I thought I could sit down and use a slanted cabber

What about if you get one of those stick blenders meant for the kitchen and used for milkshakes and for mixing batter.
They only about $10.
I dunno if you a handyman but I figure you must be if you considering that 24 V motor.
Might be someway to bolt whatever you need onto the head of the blender.
Or pull it to bits and there's your motor.

Or another thought would be a pedestal fan,
they are cheap, have 3 speed control, i made
spin art machines with them. Are quiet, easy to pull
apart and modify, only thing is they are 240 volt.
You could get an inverter as these fans are low
wattage. hope this helps.
not hard to put a thread on the shaft.

keeping it simple,,, a 24v volt dc motor as used on those nifty electric scooters , these scooters have 2 on board batteries to power the rocket Lead acid battery 12V7.5Ah x 2 , I would stay away from the 240 volt stuff, extra expense, I would use the 2 batteries , simple , portable, not dangerous and easy to recharge,
