Hi all, just chasing some advice on quietening down my gpx 4500 on very hot ground without dumbing down my machine to much. I usually run an 11 mono. I don't own any dd coils. Detect around Amherst. Still running gain and stab at FP. 8)

Hi Chuky B, Can't offer you much if the ground is severe. I presume you are running in enhance? In enhance with gain on FP it should be relatively stable on all but severe ground.
I have found a few places where I could not effectively run my 4500 because the ground was to hot. A larger DD coil helped.

Sometimes if the ground causes enhance to run chattery you can improve the situation by running in sens extra with the gain on about 6.
I kid you not, sens extra on 6 is a deep punching setting. Try air swinging your pick over the coil, you should be surprised at how far away the coil sees the pick. In sens extra the detector may groan but the groans are usually broad and you can still pick up on the sharper gold/metal target signals.

Thanks Rdd might test this next time I am out. I'm still digging signals that sound like targets but as I get further down the signal softens and the mollock I dig out signal faintly as well. This becomes frustrating digging nothing all day.

If you have the target vol above 12-13 it can make the detector noisy , in the audio what are you running quiet will help you, you do loose a bit off depth BUT you will pick up target that you are missing because of the ground noise regards john :)

Don't forget to ground balance..then check your target again..and then check it from the opposite angle before you dig..?.Im lucky my wife digs for me..she digs plenty of hot ground..can't help bad luck..I tell her it's doing her good..lol

I am familiar with the ground your talking about. Even my 14 nfa was difficult to use out there. The larger coil ground balances to a larger surface area (more broad range of minerlisation) and tends to cope noticeably better.
I ended up running in enhance, audio in quiet, motion very slow, and went down on the gain and stab a few. Made it bearable but I was still getting some signals that pulled me up on those red shiny pockets of clay.

Good point phase tech. I forgot about that. You can also try dropping the target response volume as this will quieten things down as well. I haven't had to go down that road as yet but it does work.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. Went out this Saturday around Talbot and tried a few of the tips. Ended up dropping the rx to 7 kept the stabil at 10 cranked up the target and signal volume around 17 and cranked the rooster about 3/4 of the way. Started hitting heaps of targets even very tiny stuff. Most of it junk but I did end up with 0.15g of yellow. My 6th piece in just over 2 months. I was wrapped one for the day is better than none. That coal is nasty stuff though sounds almost as good as gold until you see it. :)

Good stuff chuky boy. Well done!
I run the audio flat stick as I find the standard speaker barely loud enough. I keep the signal volume around FP and bump it up a bit if the ground allows. Works a treat.

Well done Chuky nice yella, I too was up in the Talbot area on the weekend just working below the surfaced area up from Stoney Creek trk. First time out with my 4500 and boy did I struggle with the ground noise, lost count of how many false targets I dug. I was also out with my son of 11 who loves detecting, we should catch up if you are interested next time you are in the TAlbot are.

thanks tryhard1968. I'm not familiar with the names of tracks yet I've only been to Talbot 3 times prospecting. I usually go just off blacksmiths gully road and stop at any place that looks interesting. I might be going back up there this Sunday. That's if I can get care for my youngest. I have to come from Melbourne.
