I've read it a while ago. A very interesting take on holds origins. I understand the theory, but have zero background knowledge in this field. So basically, when we find all the existing gold on earth, there "might" not be any more coming. Time to start asteroid mining? Think I'll need a bigger detector....?

Iron is made inside stars, specifically red super-giants. The elements form together inside a star during fusion. When the supernova occurs, the iron fragments are blasted into the space. This is how Iron came to Earth millions of years ago.

Traditionally, gold in the universe is thought to have formed by the r-process (rapid neutron capture) in supernova nucleosynthesis, but more recently it has been suggested that and other elements heavier than iron may also be produced in quantity by the r-process in the collision of neutron stars.

Seems to me that the egg heads are just guessing.

Isn't iron reaching the core of a star the reason for these explosions and the mass of the original star is determined by the size of explosion and only so many chemicals inside the star get time too make so many chemical reactions in the process?
