that's it diginit it is not hard to learn the basics, and a quality compass like ie silva brand do not cost a arm and a leg for a basic base plate compass which is all you need for basic navigation for prospecting /fossicking
as long as you adjust the compass to the declination to the area you are in
most of the east coast is thereabouts of 10 degrees east so you change the compass to 10 degrees east
the new silva compass a mate bought about 3 weeks ago has the degrees of declination marked on the face for you
he got the silva rangerView attachment 7149
for $47.00 it is a good buy
the link below is the declination for towns/city's in austarlia

SS probably for your application as in short distances your probably better to not complicate the maths with declination as it is marginal. Kiss principle applies. Also East depending on going map to compass minus or compass to map plus. You will rarely walk the straight line in any case. Flight or Marine different as long distances involved. As an example flight your also compensating for wind direction and hence why track and heading will rarely be the same, plus over hundreds of miles will of course make a large difference compared to 10 or 20 K or less even. Over a couple of K is probably only a hundred metres in it and from that distance you should be able to see your destination by then. Be it Car or what ever you wished to locate.
