I live near Eindhoven in the Netherlands where we have discovered some Celtic coins. There has
been a lot of discussion here recently about whether they are fake or not. To our utter amazement
we saw that a number of these coins had been found in .... Australia. (For picture see my post)
This raises a number of questions.

1. Are they fake ?
2. If they are fake who has gone to the trouble to circulate them so widely and why?
3. If they are genuine how did they get to Oz?
4. Why are they only found using metal detectors and not at archeology excavations?

We would also like to know if other apparently very old coins (100BC to 100AD) have been
found in Australia or is this a one-off?

Welcome Archy,... out here they don't really seem to say a lot about old coins and such,.... cover ups would be the order of the day,...they just don't want to upset the 80 000 years of aboriginal history too much with anything other than Bwittish Cowinization,....even the storys of non aboriginal habitation(including skeletons) found years ago just seem to fade into obscurity,... so I honestly can't see them playing up a few coins,...speaking of which, an Egyption coin was supposed to be unearthed somewhere up around the Cairns lattitude some years back when holes were being dug for a line of fence posts. Even the Pyramid near Gympie was demolished to make way for a highway,...instead of just skirting it they lined it up to make it dissapear.

There are also ancient Chinese artefacts that have been found in the NT, and records of a Chinese emperor who had a menagerie of animals including kangaroos. A pyramid at tin can bay near Cairns to.

I have to wait till I can get to a library(free internet) before I can see link 1 an 4 plus the link above Chewy.

Nice links Chewy! Thanks for the follow-up. I had found a fascinating article about traces of old civilisations in Australia.
The most impressive were the Egyptian finds. Very difficult to explain - and when there is no good explanation
the assumption is that someone has faked it! However..... I do think the "Celtic" coins with horsemen obverse and reverse
are fantasy coins. Nothing like them has been found at well-documented Celtic sites along the Danube. The enthusiasm
to do some XRF tests here has died away here so I think this is the end of the line. :(

yes Chewy all sanded in and whereabouts supposedly almost known,...under grass now I believe.

Ever heard of the mahogany ship silver?

That wikki bit on it is a good read Chewy,.... I read once (somewhere) that in arid country Australia there was a spiral well dug into rock deseigned so that any water evaporating would condense and drip back to the pool of water at the bottom of the well, rather than have it escape to the atmosphere,... someone who could dig holes in rock was very clever indeed. :)

Hoi archeoserf
Small world, I have good friends in Eindhoven , Helmont and
Capelle aan den IJssel .. Really loved staying there and exploring all the historical places, amazing!
I think you will find the claims of Egyptian exploration of the east coast of Australia are a hoax
Welkom to the forum
Cheers!

Thanks nucopia! We are doing our best to show that Eindhoven has history and is not
just a site for the Philips light bulb factory! Groetjes uit Nederland.

No ship was ever built from mahogany it is believed to be a french american or british whaler
I think you will find that some people buy coins from ebay and then find them in australia in a lot of cases
There may have been coins from collections that people brought across and lost, but the chinese coins found in the NT were shallow on the beach and in fantastic condition strange as they do not last very well in the goldfields im a sceptic
People love a great story but it is very rarely backed up with scientific evidence, and i for one get cranky when people start playing with australias real history
