Hi everybody, very new to all of this, but very interested in,fossicking around after finding some lil beauties :} I'm 29 with 4 children. Going on our first proper fossicking trip tomorrow.... :}, :lol:

Hi thankyou Jack... :} I have found a few "rocks" but I think they are just quartz. Or smokey quartz I have a,couple of not so good pics. But after using the search tool haven't found many ppl or topics on s.a. as long as the kids have fun,thats all that matters.. :}

Hi Petamarie, welcome aboard, I'm assuming fossicking for you means not detecting but in the creeks looking for colours.

Have a good read under the title of Gemstones, Minerals and Fossils on this forum.

Gumeracha, Birdwood, Williamstown and stretching around to Palmer that area in general can spring surprizes on fossickers, farmers in the Williamstown area have reported finding gemstones in the discards when digging bores, unfortunately those gravel beds lay some 10 metres underground but it is a clue to some of the geological events and makeup of the area, if memory serves me correctly just east of Gameracha heading to Birdwood around the 2 Km mark there is a lovely pegmatite that crosses the course of the River Torrens, I recall finding some well shaped crystals of green Beryl on the hill beside the pegmatite a long time ago. Good Luck in your quest.

Pete

Awesome, thanks for your insight. :} yeah I'm still unsure in all the proper terms for this stuff I generally call tilt rock or crystal hunting haha. I'm from whyalla. The best we have got down this way so far is some good size clear and Smokey quartz and a few other I guess rocks :}

Hi Petamarie,

Welcome to the forum. Hope you and the kids find some good colours. And let hope for some warmer weather.

G'day Petamarie,

you are really lucky to be in an area that has some really good collecting- Agate can be found in the creeks that cross the road to Iron Knob, Cowell has some of the best jade around, There is also some really nice opalite ranging in colour from a nice sky blue to a soft cream also there is a location not so far from Cowell that has really nice marion/smoky quartz crystals. Take a road trip south to Cowell and have a chat to Lindsay at the Jade Shed to get some info on where to look. If you don't have any success look at the rocks used to make the breakwater for the tell tale green - & you can always get a good feed of fresh fish & chips from the jetty shop or the pub on the way out of town.

Hope you & the kids have some success :)

Hi everyone, Thankyou for some very useful information. :} very much,appreciated. Like I said bot after anything spectacular, just something thats different from your everyday rock haha. We have got some quartz/ Smokey quartz. And some cave looking type ones also with the quartz and some with the purple colour through it... :}
