Hi,

My names Alex!

I must admit that I'm completely new to gem fossicking, but its certainly something I've had a fascination with for a long time.

I certainly didn't find this crystal myself but I remember getting it when I was younger, I saw it in a shop and begged my mother to buy it for me (for a solid month)... she could barely justify it, but I thought it was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever laid my eyes upon and I wouldn't/couldn't let it go. I wanted to know why and how it came to be. I finally struck a deal with her, and worked my *** off as an 8 year old to pay off the debt. - Cooking, cleaning, gardening.. you name it.

It was only until the other day, a friend showed me a handful of crystals, and I asked where he'd gotten them from. He said 'Rushworth' which is close to where I live, and I couldn't believe it. I then went home and did more and more research, and here I am. I cant seem to drop it, again. I'm never expecting to find anything as large as what I brought, but I'm curious to see what this earth has to offer and what interesting journeys and amazing things I could discover right on my doorstep in Victoria.

I live in the Echuca/Moira area and as I mentioned, I'm a complete novice. If there are any gem fossickers local to the area, I'd love to hear from you. I've been watching this forum for a while, and thought it was time to introduce myself and say hello! If anyone has any advice for a beginner, I will be more than happy to take it on board. Even better, would be great to go out fossicking with someone in Vic that might be willing to teach a few tricks of the trade.

Thanks for taking the time to read my spiel, I appreciate the amount of input and kindness that is shared on this forum!

- Alex

Welcome Alex! I'm more interested in gold tho over the years me and the wife have found some really flash rocks' like that one in your photo, after you get 10 posts PM me and I'll give you a nice place for a day trip from Echuca for crystals, mostly tiny but plenty there' we sent a bloke we met at a festival there for a look and came back with the biggest one I'd seen from this area! Even handed our map back..

Welcome Alex. You're friend is correct there's a few good crystals around those parts for people more patient than me. I've pocketed a few while playing pick hand to a few detectorists. Jasper in a myriad of colours (mostly dark reds) occurs around Colbinnabin way, if your in the right place up there by the bucket full. Beechworth is worthy and probably more areas closer. I'll bet huntingtheyellow (HTY) a member here would be able to recommend some more he knows the areas pretty well. That's all I got for a non gem hunter. Best of luck on your adventures.

Hello!

Thankyou, thats very kind. And yes, I'm sure he appreciated that advice!! Your wife and yourself have an amazing interest, it must have taken you to some amazing places with amazing discoveries.

Yes, I see why you're after that gold! I have a friend who searches for gold on the occasion, I should tag along, and I'm sure that I'd become fascinated by that also!

Goldtarget!

Your advice is greatly appreciated! Colbinnabin is certainly a reasonable distance, I'll probably head there this weekend - The adventure begins!

I'm planning to map out points in vic, take some time off work and see what I can find. You've just given me a few places already...Thankyou & same to you, best of luck, and happy hunting!

I've dug a few holes on those Hills turning up Jasper. You will need permission for private access or try the roadways between properties. The grapevines between Corop and Colbo (heathcote road) on the high side are a certainty. A couple of wineries there ( brown brothers etc)I'm sure if you ask they wouldn't mind. Keep an eye out for the rocky out crops that's where you'll have the most luck.

Hello Alex, and welcome to our amazing little world of diggers, we all end up digging at some stage to find something be it Gold, Gems, or Coins and Jewellery, even old bottles get dug up here(shown or talked about at least),... even junk, you wouldn't believe the amount of junk and rubbish some of us remove from mother earth in the search for our goodies, all dealt with in the appropriate manner as well. I hope your pockets end up full of stones(good ones) and may your memories all be golden.
Cheers and Beers.
Silver.

Hey Alex,

Firstly welcome. There's something about crystals and gems that you either love or are not interested in at all. It seems that you have been born with that extra gem attraction chromosome! I can assure you that the same will come with gold when you see it in its natural state, straight out of the creek or ground.

Secondly be sure to go on your adventures with a friend for safety and without sounding like an over protective dad, don't meet up anyone through PM one on one. I am sure you are aware of modern day dangers.

Please share some photos of your finds or questions that forum members will do their best to answer for you. Good luck, gems are out there you just have to work real hard to get them!

Regards

RS

Haha, cheers and many, many beers alright Silver!

You're right, it is an amazing little world of diggers. Its great to see that such a forum exists. Aww, thankyou.. ^_^ I hope my pockets will be full of (good) stones too! Who knows what my journeys will find, very exciting.

Peace out, and thanks.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm certainly trying to be mindful of private land/restricted fossicking areas. I used to work in a brewery and made a few connections with some of the wineries in Heathcote. So I'll certainly follow that up! I was only at Brown brothers a few months ago and drive on that road frequently. How clueless I am. Thankyou (again) Goldtarget. Don't have words for this type of kindness! :)

Oooo, its a chromosome alright! I think you're right about the gold. I feel like these amazing natural wonders that the earth has created are the true beauty in life, I love exploring the science and concept of the amount of time it took to create these amazing wonders always intrigues me.

Not sounding like an over protective dad at all, but you're absolutely right. I work in IT and see an increasing number of the younger generation falling victim to the dangers of online predators. Planning to bring my mate who originally showed me the rushworth gems.

Will certainly keep everyone posted on my finds, and share where I found them! Luckily for me, patience is my greatest virtue.

All the best Retirement Stone and wishing you safe and prosperous journeys.

Thanks Zuke_Lynzy! I've been watching this forum for a while but felt like I might have been out of my depth. I'm glad I've finally joined the conversation, and like I said to Goldtarget, I have no words for the generosity and kindness that you've already shown to a person who is completely new to the field.

Not going to lie, I'm excited and very keen to start fossicking!

Hello Alex from Echuca! I know you posted this a while ago, but I was just wondering if your still up this way, as I just moved to Rochester and I am super keen to find someone else who loves seeking crystals to go for a fossick with!

I've been to rushworth, well below it actually, in Whroo seeking crystals, and I found a couple, I took my mum with me and it was an amazing time!

I also found some amethyst in nsw, an amazing druisy near south Aus, and I have found some smokey in Alexandera, and what looks to be zebra stone there, which is odd as that's only meant to be found in western Aus. I've been turning that into necklace pendants.

I also just found some small amounts of gold in the town I'm in on the bank in small bits of Quartz with what looks to be smokey mixed in, but on a closer look it is a darl olive green colour.

Was wondering if you would like to come for a fossick to see if we can find any more if your still up this way. I've just joined this group (probably should of done it sooner) so even if anyone else has any other areas worth a look up here, don't be shy, if anyone wants to meet up for a good fossick, I'm happy to go for a search. My dad just brought two metal detectors that I have access to, a sluice, gold pans, and A couple of other goodies to help search for things, so super keen to get out there with a camping trip.

Look forward to getting to know the community.

I like you Alex, have always been interested in crystals! I have so many here, I would not even be able to name them all in one day, as I have so many varieties!

But I am more than happy to share some of my my knowledge I do have with anyone. Maybe one or two places I might keep secret as they are super special places that are pretty sacred and special, and we don't want them ruined and they are ones to be respected, but a fair few I would let you know of so you can have some awesome fun.

Good luck on your trips, and I hope you have found something amazing so far super special to you.

My name is Renee. I hope to chat in the future! :Y: :rainbow:
