HI, we are Debbie and Steven, from the ACT.....hubby having the midlife crisis, and wants to learn about prospecting  we have only been in the ACT for 12mths, so still getting to know the area. we (he) would like to here from anybody who could give him some pointers....greatly appreciated. :)
thanks again.

What sort of prospecting is he looking to get into? The easyest/cheapest way would be gol/gem hunting. You only really need a pan, shovel and maybe a sieve to get started. From there you can progress to a river sluice or highbanker.
If he is interested in detectors there are also a few ways to start. Like relic/coin or gold detecting or both? This would determine what detector to look at.

As for places to start, i found Oallen ford to be a great place to find a bit of colour and there will quiet often be other prospectors out there, most of which are too happy to help out or have a chat.

Great to see some fellow potential fossickers from Canberra, and welcome to the forum. Plenty of antidotes here to help ease those " mid life crisis " pains...not always dispensed by chemists but certainly by enthusiastic patients :) feel free to ask all the questions you like and I'm sure many answers will be forthcoming .Cheers Wal. :)

Hia Debbie & Steven,
Welcome aboard.
Like Shiv said, once you figured out what kinda prospecting you're leaning to, there'd be heaps of help/advice for ya.

Yep, definitely gold fever...
Some of the other symptoms will be looking at anything in hardware stores or scrap yard to see how things can be used/modified to aid your prospecting, hours & hours of Youtube "study" & getting strange looks from friends & family coz all you talk about is gold or related to gold.
No cure :D

Hi people.
Welcome to the forum.
What part of Canberra do inhabit?
Your in "mid life crisis" other half is more than welcome to tag along when I venture out to Oallen, (about every 2nd weekend).

Jeff

thank you all for the welcomes, i have indulged his new fad  and have brought him a garrett set of pans and yes he has been youtubing everything on panning...are there any places not far from act that he could go to for some learning experience? also are there any places on the coast? thanks for any help. :)

Hi banksy...jeffU's advice on Oallen Forde would be a great place to start for any beginner. :) It's impossible to go there panning and not find some colour. Start on the downstream rock bars and dig the gravel just inside the river rather than the shore gravels. These areas are less likely to be hi-banked and can be quite rewarding. If your heading down to the Bay then all the small creeks around Mogo still produce colour. ;) If you head up Shallow Crossing road you will find many of the creeks there also hold colour...especially those closer to Shallow Crossing itself...Cheers Wal. :)
