Hi guys and gals, new to the whole fossicking hobby.
Looking for something fun to do with the wife on weekends and an excuse to whip out the camping gear.
We live on the Sunshine Coast and are looking for areas to setup camp and go panning (to start with).

We aren't asking for your secret spots rather just a nice camp ground to have a go and see what happens.

Welcome guys, Unfortunately I can't help you regarding the Sunshine Coast but I'm sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction soon enough. In the meantime feel free to browse through the topics and ask any questions that you might have.

Cheers,
Nugget

Welcome to the forum Dan. Shouldn't take you too long to find some productive areas close to you. The forum has a vast amount of information stored amongst the threads and researching these threads will get you well under way.

Hope the new hobby adds adventure to your camping trips, and best of luck with the prospecting.

Cheers Wal.

Thanks Nugget, my parents have been to a camp ground where they take you on a panning tour. So we will probably go there as we have no experience at all.

I read a topic about detectors for beginners/entry level and have had a look on eBay, it may be a silly question but are the cheapish ($300-$600) detectors rubbish or will they do the job for the occasional fossicker?

It's hard to say without knowing brands, model numbers etc but generally speaking you get what you pay for.

Research is key to buying any detector and I'd suggest staying away from eBay at least until you know what you want out of the machine, otherwise you might end up buying something you regret later on.

Check out the Metal Detectors section of the forum as it's filled with info relating to that first purchase.

Cheers,
Nugget

Yeah I kinda figured as much with eBay but sometimes you can hit a good bargain (other hobbies). I think we will just start out with a couple of pans.. Thanks for the help
