Hello Everyone

How confronting trying to think what to use as a sign in....... haha should have put Old timers for sure.
We are Grahame and Judith both recently retired and know zilch about detecting, we haven't bought a detector as yet, reading the forum to get some ideas, however the more we read the more confused we become, so if there is anyone out there that can throw us a lifeline we would both appreciate it immensely.

Hello first timers well you have to work out your budget and what you want to look for as there are different types of detectors when you have those 2 things sorted we will really confuse you lol
And some are hard to use but im sure there is a lot of people on here with a lot of knowledge but when you have a few posts up then pm a few people or you will start a riot lol

G'day from another old timer and welcome. As has been said re detectors, it depends what you are going to be looking for. If its beach searching then there are machines for that also for land relic searching and then there is gold searching. Once you narrow it down then the choice is how much detecting you will do and how much do you want to spend. Hope this helps.

Thank you all so very much for the warm welcome. Haven't been able to log in for a while, but would like to update, we purchased a Detech EDS plus, our first try after a fair bit of practice was a whole heap of fun, we went to a private property at Bung Bong Victoria, didn't find any gold but heaps of old bits and pieces. The detector has good depth (well good enough for beginners I guess) Hoping to do some travelling this year, that's the plan anyway so will look forward to trying again.

That's a lovely intro and may you have very good luck.

The Bung Bong crown land area both sides of the Talbot Avoca Road reads very patchy for gold. The best location is the One Mile Flat/Cumberland Gully to the north and south of the road. It may have been fed from the Mystic Peak or Albert Reefs. There are several small 'patches' in the crown land and what appear to be diggers workings and 'reef' workings - these are also marked on the old geological survey maps as well - they area on the whole (no pun intended) as diggers test holes. This is not to dissuade you as modern technology can cover a lot of ground in ways the old timers couldn't. If you can get onto your private land, I would personally concentrate at the heads of any gullies where the ground will be shallower for you and around any old mullock heaps or signs of where they are. You are most certainly in the right area for gold - between Avoca, Talbot and Maryborough.
