I have retired recently and now intend to do things I have not been able to do, which is a familiar thing for retirees.
I am now following prospecting and detecting forums, trying to get as much info as I can. It seems most people favour Minelab detectors, as they tell me they are the best. That is unfortunately reflected in the price, which is holding me back at the moment. I would hate to buy one and find it was not for me. Also the weather we are having in WA is not good.
Look forward to following any advice that may be forthcoming.
Cheers

G'day Russo and welcome to the forum. You can always hire detector to try if it is for you before you spend the hard earned. Good luck in your endevours and keep us posted.

Thanks Beagleboy, if and when I get my first gold, I doubt I'll be able to stop going on to all and sundry, hanging out for the day....

Hi Russo,

Get the best you can afford. If you're unsure, and thinking of getting a second hand detector, hiring a unit is good advice.
You may "click" with the first detector you hire, but if you weren't "feeling" it, hire a different unit next time.

For unbiased advise, you could attend a West Coast Metal Detecting club meeting.

Just remember, WA is generally highly mineralised so you need a good unit that will handle the ground minerals - that will make a big difference to shortening your learning curve. The SDC2300 will be worth considering which will be out soon, as it handles ground minerals exceptionally well.

Hello and welcome to the forum, you will find them a great bunch and the experience out there is amazing. I agree as said above, hire a detector and find out if it is the right hobby for you or not, and if it is buy the best detector you can afford. Lots of people buy a cheaper detector and think they will be able to buy a Minelab later on with the gold they will find. Unfortunately this does not work out in a majority of cases, as it is getting harder and harder to find, even if using a GPX 5000.

Hi Russo,

Try going along with someone first, I watched a bloke chasing park pennies and he found about $30 in 45 minutes. I asked him what gear he was using and where he bought it,he told me everything even gave me ago of his detector and shared alot of information. Within 2 weeks I was at the same shop buying the same gear. Been addicted since with fairly good results for a beginner.

Cheers Rob
