Do u mean hard wire the 3.6mm adapter to the headphones ?.
I don't think you can do that. Think he means to change the wiring configuration to mono but I don't believe that would work. Needs to be a specifically wired 1/4" stereo plug which you might be able to hardwire to your lead if handy with that type of thing.

I can't find how many ohms they are but I may look into a amplifier for the headphones..I appreciate your help cheers

Hi Mbasko, you can usually pull those adapters apart. i have soldered the two back contacts together (not the tip.)

Yep that should give you a pseudo mono plug but from how Minelab say to wire the stereo plug I can't see how it would trip the amp. You need to have a live tip & ring - the sleeve needs to be dead. By soldering the sleeve & ring contacts together then the sleeve is still live?
Did it work for you?

Hey all,

Trying to decide on a good new set of headphones.

Have heard the sun ray gold were good, but cant seem to find them for sale in aus.

There are numerous headphones advertised all around the $220 mark.

Black widow
Grey Ghost
SS300
Nugget Buster
Sun Ray Gold

Any suggestions on which to get?

I have a set of SS300,s and they are good, lift quiet signals no doubt about it, however, they are uncomfortable.

Black Widow, Gray Ghost and Nugget Buster are from the same manufacturer and are all built on the same very solid earmuff 'chassis', but with different features distinguishing them:

Black Widow have extra internal dampening for reducing background noise, however the greater earphone thickness does result in a tighter fit. Ideal for beach detecting near surf or windy days in the bush. May also be an advantage to those with poorer hearing.

Gray Ghost have individual volume controls for each ear and loudness protection, so you can use higher volume to hear tiny signals without risking your ears if you swing over an axe head.

Nugget Buster have a single volume control.

Both Gray Ghost and Nugget Buster also have models with easily replaceable plug-in cables.

SunRay Gold have similar features to Gray Ghost, but also have real leather ear and head pads. Nenad Lonic (PhaseTech) used to sell these.

All the above models are built on workplace earmuff chassis, which are considerably more robust than conventional stereo headphones intended for listening to music. They are all specialist-designed for metal detecting - music sounds terrible through them, as they lack both bass and treble response: mid-range is what counts with detectors. I have a big head and none are uncomfortable, although fit is very snug, so they won't easily fall off like those wretched Koss that Minelab sell.

I was always doubtful about wireless headphones, but thought what the hell I'm sick of cords. Purchased the Deteknix Wireless with transmitter from Phase Technical, very comfortable to wear and easily lasts 8 hours of swinging. Signal is crisp and clear and has volume control.

I'm sold on wireless

I've just got a set of detecnix wireless phones, jury still out for me, love the freedom, not sure about the signal quality.

I went the wireless Detecnix phones (through Nenad) after the frustration of hooking up on the scrub constantly and although I've only had 1 trip with them so far it was the best investment I could make to make my detecting time more pleasurable, love them!

If Nenad cannot order the Sunrays anymore (still waiting for him to chime in), Reeds Prospecting are also agents for them - most likely need to be ordered in.

Thanks for the Info.
It's a tough decision. In working on my on wireless setup so just chasing normal headphones. Sound like the normal ones listed are all much of muchness. Which doesn't make it any easier. Definately keen to get something before our big WA trip. Nothing worse than those Koss headphones lol.

Waiting on some info from another forum from a guy who made his own headphones and used the same drivers that are in the Sun ray gold. Could be interesting. There has to be a cheaper diy option. $200+ is a bit out there

Hey guys,

So been away from the game for a while and looking to return with some new ways of doing things, one of those being headphones.

I have never used headphones but I'm pretty certain I would be far more distracted keeping track of my surroundings wearing headphones than by a bit of wind noise etc. without.

So my questions, do "in ear" style buds let you also hear a bit of surrounding noise while still being better than an external speaker?

Has any one used these http://www.detectorpro.com/rattler.htm and how do they compare against either a speaker or normal headphones?

Thanks.

Try Backphones, they go around the back of your head, give you pretty good sound, are light and you can still wear a hat and sunnies if needed.

They don't completely seal over your ear but you can hear through wind no worries (I use em on the beach a lot) and you can still hold a conversation with them on.

Welcome back to the Hobby,

Happy Hunting
