Ill never darken their doors again. I bought a fridge in February which had to be repaired within the first two weeks then at three and a half months it died altogether. We were given a Store credit. When we went to get the new fridge we found the same fridge was now $400 dearer. We wanted the same fridge but Harveys salesman blamed Electrolux for increasing the price. We wanted to know why Harvey Norman wouldnt just replace the faulty product after all their moto is buying with confidence. They said its not our problem talk to Electrolux. My wife contacted Electrolux who didnt want to know either but with some pushing we were offered a fridge but had to wait until it was sent from NSW approx 3 weeks. At three weeks we rang to see where the new fridge was and were told we have no record of that deal. My wife was talking to a very rude consultant who after some very heated conversation agreed that there was indeed a fridge for us but now we have to wait until August to have it sent to us. This has been the worst service Ive ever received. In good faith the faulty fridge should have been replaced. I will say that Electrolux is trying to organise a loan fridge but I believe the buck should stop with Gerry Harvey. Never again

I emailed Harvey Normans help department whose blurb says that they will contact you within 24 hours. I sent the email 4 days ago and havent heard squat. Bloody poor. Shame on Harvey Norman

Under Australian consumer laws your contract is with Hardly Normal, not with Electrolux. These laws are standard over all of Australia and have nothing to do with various states. By law they must either repair, replace or refund. If it cannot be repaired within reasonable time you can demand it to be replaced with the same or better model. They CANNOT refuse or make you take a store credit.

Get your states consumer affairs phone number, go back to the store and see the manager, if he is intransigent ring consumer affairs in front of him

We had a washing machine from HN and thime first time we used it the hinge lock for the door stayed locked with the door in the open position. HN had a service rep look at it the next day and they called it Dead on arrival and gave us a new replacement asap...
So it was all good for us. Second machine is still going strong a couple of years later :Y:

I wouldn't be too hard on Gerry. Harvey Norman stores are independently owned by franchisees.

Never had any dramas with our local store here.
I have used the call to Fair Trading in front of the Manager at Big W though - works a treat. On the spot replacement of goods after they wanted me to return it to the manufacturer for warranty.

went to HN to purchase a sound bar for the idiot box, none in stock,we'll order one for you ,ok ,I paid and said i'll come in next week to get.
Salesman didn't say boo.
I rang a week later b4 going in and was told it would be a further 2 1/2 to 3 weeks.BS was my reply,"It's coming from china", I wasn't told that!
I asked if the could get one from another store, nope,we're independent of each other [franchised]
Went in next day got my money back [they could tell I was a little emotional ]
Went to another retailer and got the same one for 3 dollars more on the same day.

Fair trading are brilliant, I've had to use their services a few times over the years. All of a sudden companies that won't deal with you start calling and bending over backwards to help get things sorted out.

go back tell em to shove the store credit up their bum and get the cash back.

Update. I read a bit of the consumer law stuff last night then called fair trading this morning. They said new fridge or refund NO STORE CREDIT. Called the local HN asked for the manager to call me before I arrived or it would get noisey. He didnt call, it got noisey and a little bit blue. I quoted some consumer law and told him Id been in contact with Consumer Affairs. He rang the manufacturer and confirmed the fridge was kaput. funny thing is we will have a new fridge in the morning. Why this couldnt have happened in the first place is beyond me. They hope you just throw your hands in the air and say its all too hard Im sure. Anyway tomorrow should be a better day. Cheers

BTW the whole service agent repair thing is almost a scam or at least a way they try to get out of there obligation. I know this because my brother in law works in the industry and they do it to people all the time when the customer returns to get a refund. If you have a faulty product within the first year ask for a replacement or your money back say NO to sending it to a service agent. It will be far quicker and simpler to get your money back and buy somewhere else.

I have found the NSW dept. of Fair Trading to be a toothless tiger. Under Australian consumer law you have rights that extend even past the expiry date of the guarantee.

Yes.

Many retailer issues i had were ignored or not actioned by Fair Trading.

Biggest bunch of useless chair warmers in the country.

One of my issues was also with Harvey Norman where i paid for a Deluxe memory foam mattress worth $5500 but they supplied me with a basic memory foam one and refused to do anything , they just passed the buck for months and Fair Trading just sidestepped it , then after another 5 emails and phone calls they eventually wrote to HN , I contacted their store manager , then state manager and they will "call me right back shortly" (about 10 years ago).

I still have the mattress stored in my garage.

I have not purchased anything from them since.
