Hi all

How well would something like this work somewhere like Sapphire Bend?

http://www.bunnings.com.au/cyclone-150mm-auger-post-hole-digger_p3360162

I was thinking about getting one to make sure there is a wash layer before I commit to digging.

Cheers

Pete

No idea where Sapphire Bend is or what the ground is like,
but,
I have this auger and works well here is Melbourne till I hit clay [approx 500 mm at my joint]
However,
at my place in Dunolly [GT] all the teeth bent in the first 100mm, and the thing was useless after that.
Might look for an auger with a wick :p

Anyone looking for an auger just visit any steel fabricator, tell em what you want and they will make it in no time, took 3 hours. Cost 210 with 3 extension bars. Goes like a ripper but it's f...kin tough work, will have arms like Popeye.

Plenty of room for an extension bar or two to fit in the handle horizontally. Might make you feel like a draught house at the puddler but saves the arms. Can't see the auger end but a couple of times spent heating to red and quenching the blade face with a torch and a few passes with some facing rods will do wonders for cutting ability and longevity. Looks like you're on a winner. May your auger find some treasure!

looks good spike...any chance of pics of the whole thing?

And did you find what you were looking for in the bottom of the hole? ;)

Hey mjb pics as requested, yesterday was a test run only. We took it down to the handle and was happy with that, was very tough ground at moliagul, gonna try hit bottem in our paddock along a water course, never know ey.

That looks the business Spike, pretty simple design too.

I reckon that may be my next project.

Was it easy to sample the dirt you got out of the hole?

Yep very good samples, brings up about 10cm at a time, any more and it would get stuck from friction

I like that.
Auger over core sample.
Some times the most simple turn out to be the best.

i just got a post hole auger attachment off ebay for 55$ 1 metre long 100mm diameter anything wider i find is to hard and the ones you can get at bunings dont work to well in rocky soils it all falls out before you get it out of the hole. All i need to do now is make some extensions
