Hi everyone I'm about to buy a hand auger and wondered if someone could throw advice this way.
It's going to be used in tough ground so has to be up to the job,

Looking to spend 250 ish
There is a lot of toys on the market but don't need it busting in the first use.
Thanks in advance

Hi Spike,

Have a look for a Geologists auger. They are around 50mm diameter and you can keep adding sections the deeper you go and they bring out a core of dirt for you to sample whats at the bottom of your hole

Thanks mjb your a champion. Exact info I was after. ;)
My mountain of gold gets ever closer

Do you have any suggestions or seen a hand made one, I believe the farmers used to make something for bores ?

I am very keen as well, to be able determine the bottom/bedrock of locations.

Anyone reckon it would be worth visiting the local black smith? Might be able to make up extension rods and tommy bar for bugger all then we just need to buy the cutting bit or maybe they could also knock that up too. Love to hear others thoughts or experiences

I remember a while ago I read on here, a bloke made and used his own auger with great success, can't find post now but would be awesome to hear from him :)

Have a look at a Geologists supply shop. There are some on line and they sell the things. I don't have one myself but have seen one owned by a former member here and he swore by it.

Not sure on price though

That's the only thing mjb, the best deal I could find was about 450 little above me atm, a kit is worth 2500 new woah 8.(

Depends on your location mate but you can have them made,
If your handy on the tools there is a profile you can cut out and bend/stretch the cut sheet to suit the pipe your going to use, this can be found by googling profile auger flight sections.
If your not so handy on the tools keep your eye out for an engineering company that manufacture grain augers, there is one in Bendigo Vic that I've used in the past to make earth augers for post rammers, 3 point linkage augers, petrol powerd hand held augers, and hand held manual augers, you simply tell them the diameter of the hole you want to bore and they do the rest,
Another way is to buy a Bunnings earth auger, they're the ones that have the tap out spring loaded lever on top at the handle to knock the dirt out of the tube auger. :)

Yeah...that's a bit above me too Spike. Hopefully you might be able to find a second hand one for cheaper or go with DWT's suggestion and have one made to your liking.

G'day heatho, how do they go on hard clay and gravelly stuff?? How deep have you taken it down??, think they only go down a meter, looking to be 2 meters minimum. Thanks

A 2" with 2 4 foot sections would suit me fine.
I do not think it would be hard to make.
I better put my thinking cap on.
I have been thinking of making one along the way of a water spear.
Getting lazy in my old age. LOL

Hi all

How well would something like this work somewhere like Sapphire Bend?

http://www.bunnings.com.au/cyclone-150mm-auger-post-hole-digger_p3360162

I was thinking about getting one to make sure there is a wash layer before I commit to digging.

Cheers

Pete
Can't help you with sapphire bend mate but these things work pretty well, the only let down is when you start snagging larger rocks then it can fit in its tube :)
