When I head out bush I basically take a compass bearing at the vehicle in the direction I plan on heading say 30degrees then when I'm heading back I just add 180degrees which equals 210degrees on the compass and make my way back to the vehicle with that bearing seems to work for me. Don't know if this is the way to do it but it's something I was shown when heading out to the reefs and shoals when fishing and it seems to work out in the bush for me. Just food for thought.

I think one of my legs is longer than the other, this might be why I detect in circles.lol
If your going walkabout, it is good judgement to prepare for a night in the bush. (Matches, thermal blanket, poncho, some snacks, water!!,torch and spare batteries).
Most prospectors wont detect out of sight of their vehicle, I have witnessed this countless times.
This is a positive when your prepared to go that extra mile. There is a lot of gold diggings, shafts, and mines that are not recorded(documented). There is also ground that has never had a coil over it.

Hi Nugget, I plan on searching around Warwick QLD, I would love to get a decent map and compass go go exploring with, as with you, did it at school and I had a blast, not saying I was great, but I always topped the class for navigating, something I will invest in when I get together my plans of prospecting.
