Hey, long time lurker first time poster, my names Phil n I'm from kingower. Well I'm not from here but I moved here about 6 months ago.

In that six months the gold bug has bitten me in the butt something bad..

I've got a rock crusher dolly pot thingy, a few pans n a few sieves. N I'm loving my new hobby in prospecting..

I love being outside.. I love the bush.. I used to spend all my time in bealiba as a child just roaming through the bush in the heat catching bugs and throwing rocks.. I remember my pa pulling the ute over n having a quick pan n then we'd be on our way again.. It's great it's awoken the explorer in me and its great fun.

I am shocking at panning. Like so tish it's not funny.. I remember not even being able to find gold at sovereign hill hahaha.. But somehow I've prevailed and I found a teeny tiny nugget three or four weeks ago when the rains came. Sadly I lost it last week though.. I'm such an ***** haha

Walked out into the kooyora forest found a river, dug down to clay n scraped a few shovel fulls into my bucket to bring home n pan n BAM I found it! Its the only bit I've found n I've tried alot.. detecting (borrowing old mans xterra) but I don't know it well enough. Think I need to go see someone to teach me more.
I've dug a five, maybe six foot hole. N am still going through the 'pay' dirt with my fingers crossed. Done some panning n yeah kinda at a loss at what to do now..

So that's my life story till now, if your in kingower say g'day ill more than likely be walking around or you'll see my beautiful blue vl parked on the side of the road somewhere.

Peace.

Good on you bloke for having a go. :) :)
You are in trouble now,
Be hardly at home and then return covered in Mud and such
with a happy tired smile.
Oh, There is no cure when you catch this disease.

Hi Phil welcome to the forum, I know what you mean when you say your crap at panning I have just built a high banker and have no bloody idea of how to pan lol but it will be fun to give it a go.Hope you find plenty of yellow stuff if you do let me know and i will come out and help you with it lol ,the main thing is that you enjoy the hunt .

Thought i could pan but a 12 year old was panning a bend that i had worked a couple of weeks before and got near a 1/4 oz in her Vegermite jar before lunch . I did not say anything but studied her style of panning from a distance and she was real quick and missed nothing Her dad who must of been panning near by rocked up and helped her finish of the bend ,packed her up and moved on to another spot that was more productive..From that day i have learnt to use a pan and hopefully dont miss much .

Hi Phillip, I found the key to learning how to pan is to practice practice practice. I spent a month with a $12 plastic pan doing hours upon hours a day into a bathtub. When it was full of tailings I panned them again until I was confident that not one speck was getting thrown out. I bought a trailer load of pay dirt to keep me busy. The tailings will end up in a cacti garden eventually.

Hey mate, that's exactly what I've been doing aswell. Not in my bath though hahaha my missus's would murder me. But I bought a big plastic container n I made my shed into a workshop n I will, I'll sit there and pan a shovel full of dirt nearly half a dozen times before I'm happy to put it in the crap pile...

Hahaha wow, I feel pretty useless knowing a 12 year old girl can clean up a river better than I could. But that's what I think I need to do is pan with someone or watch someone in real life, there and then n get some tips, cos until then I'm practicing and practicing and may be perfecting a sub par method.

Also, thank you all for the warm welcomes
