Perhaps a really noob question but did I miss something in grade 9 biology?
When waving a hand full of dirt over my coil I am getting excited thinking I have a target in my hand only to end up with the same tone from my bare hand.
Is this a sensitivity issue or am I the bionic man with golden knuckes?

I have tried holding the detector in different ways, angles etc and even tried it clean skin ( not nude, just with empty pockets etc) and still get a weak to medium tone.

Has anyone else encountered this or able to tell me how dumb I am?

Cheers,

Morg

VLF? Yes - it happens on my Xterra 70 as well from time to time. Very faint but noticeable break in the threashold. I think it is because you are breaking the electronic output or some other wizz bang techo reason. You are not dumb - good question. I even get it with an empty plastic shovel. On my 4500 (PI) - never happens.

Morgan82, mate you have to use a plastic scoop to retrieve your targets or pin point closer with a pro-pointer. I am told that the hi frequency VLF detectors can pick up the minerals and salts in your hands. This is more pronounced with small coils as well. :)

True even states it in the Whites GMT manual & recommends using a plastic scoop.

Can't say I've ever experienced this using the AT Gold. Must only be certain VLF's.

Usually only heard of on higher frequency VLF's like the GMT but have also heard it can affect different people worse too I.e. if your prone to be sweaty then you will have more mineral salt in your skin or something like that :p
I know I had to use a scoop with the GMT as I set it off.

Hi Nugget, Morg,

It happens with my AT Gold, when the sensitivity is high. From what I read it is supposed to be because your hand is a better conductor than thin air or soil.

You raise an excellent point that I forgot to mention as well. On the Xterra I run it flat out at sensitivity 30 on quartz and white mullock - yes, it is far more susceptible to 'detecting' my hand.

Morgan I had something similar - not a golden knuckle but the inside of my button at the end of my shirt that was plastic on the outside and metal on the inside. Took me while to figure it out - as I was separating the soil with both hands, to make the situation more confusing I had right hand sleeve rolled up. :)

Nice, some good info. Thanks.

I am using either 12mhz or 18mhz so that makes sense. Also It is a small coil.

I did renovate my house in Qld that is over 100yrs old and im pretty sure the lead paint wasn't real good for me lol
Might need to get tested for lead poisoning

I'm also going to play with the sensitivity now and see what happens.

That should be 12 kHz or 18 kHz otherwise you should have ham license. :)

Same for the Goldmaster 3, very noticible rise in threshold just from close hand movements, hence why a lot of air tests holding small nuggets in your hand are flawed. GM3 runs high frequency at 50kHz.
